Why is this an example of sacrilegious communion?

Hello

I just have seen a video by Fr. Edgardo ‘Bing’ in which he calls for 40 days of prayer and fasting - good call!

In the video, while he is explaining the need for prayer and fasting, the video shows of many bad things happening in the world (Covid-19, protests, destroying of statues), and the he shows a clip that is titled “Sacrilegious Holy Communion for fear of Covid-19”.

I’ll add a link to the video with time stamp that shows the part. Basically it seems that some parish putted Jesus (Holy Eucharist) in what looks like small paper envelopes. A lady walks and takes one of the envelope, then the clip switches to (the same?) lady that is in her car and eats (takes) the Holy Communion.

So, what I think is wrong with that is:
  1. basically anyone can come in the Church and take the Consecrated Host - (but so can during the
    Holly Mass)
  2. that Jesus is placed in an envelope and particles are probably inside it still, after use (hopefully there
was some prescribed way of discarding the envelope - perhaps by letting it fall apart in the water)
  3. that Jesus is carried outside the Church and basically eaten in a car in the Church parking lot - even
though from the video, I think lady does it with reverence (relative to the setting and surroundings),
just how it looks to me.
  4. I do not know if the local bishop gave green light for this
Now of course if this was going on just because, I would see the problem with the whole thing all together.

Where I live there were no sacraments. Period. If that was offered like in this church, I would feel uncomfortable - and would not ‘receive’ (take). If a bishop would say that it’s okay, then while I would feel uncomfortable and sad and anxious, but I just may ‘receive’ (take).

I normally received Jesus on the tongue after a slight bow. When we were all mandated to receive Jesus in hands, I was not happy and did not receive the Eucharist. My scrupulosity kicked in (I know we are allowed to receive in hand), anyway this is not about that. Now I do receive in hand.

But did that lady in the video commit sacrilege? If we consider that it’s Covid-19, that there is much confusion because of it and that we all do what we can.

Please note, that I am 100% against disrespecting Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and that I would rather see that kind of Holy Communion not taking place, and would not want to be a part of it, but considering covid19 and everything, what made that sacrilegious Holy Communion?

Honestly I try to understand.

Here’s the video:

p.s. English is not my first language, so that’s why I said “eat” Holy Communion. Would ‘consume’ be better? I don’t know. 🙂 Thanks!

Please stop watching these crazy videos.

First you don’t even really know WHAT this is a video of, no context just a couple of seconds of clips.

The woman who is in her car could have validly received the Eucharist.

YOU DO NOT KNOW.

Neither do we. We cannot comment on this.

Ok. Yes, just a few seconds of clips and I agree, she could have validly received the Eucharist, this is precisely why I wrote the post. Did you read it in it’s entirety?

Are you asking why it would be sacrilegious for someone to take an envelope with a consecrated host in it and carry it out to their car and consume it?

In general, Catholics are not supposed to receive Christ in a paper envelope or a baggie or anything like that to carry away with them.

The only people who may take Christ out of the church are clergy and those who are designated EMHCs who are carrying Communion to the sick or homebound, with the permission of the priest. They use a pyx, which is a special metal container that is reverent and appropriate for carrying Jesus. And they do not carry their own Holy Communion away to consume later; they are only allowed to be taking the Communion to others who absolutely cannot come to church, like someone sick in bed, or elderly people who are too frail to go out.

Bishops have not approved carrying Jesus away in a paper envelope or baggie or whatever. Not even during COVID time. Some parishes tried to do this and the bishops told them to stop.
