Why is this verse ignored in today's society?

Why is it that people don’t look up the history of engagement and wedding rings, and their connection with honoring the states of betrothal and marriage?

Heck, why is it that someone Christian would give tacit insult to the ancient Christian custom of gold crowns for the bride and groom as they engage in the sacrament of matrimony?

I don’t think Paul is condemning all jewelry. He is speaking about the sin of pride. What Paul is saying to the women is similar to what James is saying to the men in these verses:
Jas 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory, with respect of persons.
Jas 2:2 For if there shall come into your assembly a man having a golden ring, in fine apparel; and there shall come in also a poor man in mean attire:
Jas 2:3 And you have respect to him that is clothed with the fine apparel and shall say to him: Sit thou here well: but say to the poor man: Stand thou there, or: Sit under my footstool:
Jas 2:4 Do you not judge within yourselves, and are become judges of unjust thoughts?
Jas 2:5 Hearken, my dearest brethren: Hath not God chosen the poor in this world, rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which God hath promised to them that love him?
Jas 2:6 But you have dishonoured the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you by might? And do not they draw you before the judgment seats?
Jas 2:7 Do not they blaspheme the good name that is invoked upon you?
Jas 2:8 If then you fulfil the royal law, according to the scriptures: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; you do well.
Jas 2:9 But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, being reproved by the law as transgressors.

Why is it that the first thing a person tends to do is buy an expensive diamond ring for the woman when the become engaged?
Hi,

I do not know why you chose this particicular verse; but so are numerous other verses that are ignored in today’s society.; a most imprtant point as St Augustine suggests is
LOVE GOD first and do whatever you want.

If one really loves the LORD; he/she will follow the footsteps of Jesus and nothing will go wrong.

In any situation; a good question to ask is
“WHAT WOULD JESUS HAVE DONE IN THIS SITUATION?”
So, search the Scriptures.

At the risk of sounding crass … many ancient Christians also worshipped golden calves.

Also; these verses say:
Book of 1 Peter:
3 Your adornment should be not an exterior one, consisting of braided hair or gold jewellery or fine clothing,

4 but the interior disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and peaceful spirit, so precious in the sight of God.

5 That was how the holy women of the past dressed themselves attractively-they hoped in God and were submissive to their husbands;

6 like Sarah, who was obedient to Abraham, and called him her lord. You are now her children, as long as you live good lives free from fear and worry.
What qualifies this act as an exception to the Biblical word?
What is your specific definition of expensive?
Something the POOR may not afford … something that isn’t a humble and modest attire …

I don’t say things right sometimes. These verses help (somewhat) with what I am trying to say.

as I understand it - Jesus would not carry a spare pair of sandals
Book of Luke Chapter 10:
4 Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.
Also this verse here seems to shed light on where this topic has shown itself …

Titus Chapter 2 said:
12 it has taught us that we should give up everything contrary to true religion and all our worldly passions; we must be self-restrained and live upright and religious lives in this present world,

13 waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Christ Jesus.

Allow me to clarify this … I am “OLD SCHOOL”

My First Communion was the last one our Parrish did in Latin.

The changes and permitted methodology I have personally seen over the years is unacceptable … and I want to know why it is done as such …

One more set of verses …
Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 11:
1 Take me as your pattern, just as I take Christ for mine.

2 I congratulate you for remembering me so consistently and for maintaining the traditions exactly as I passed them on to you.

Ah, Christians tend to buy modest engagement rings, not expensive ones.

Not sure this is a “today’s society” issue. Christians (Catholics) have been wearing engagement and wedding rings for centuries. Probably the difference you are seeing is people’s willingness to go into debt for whatever they want right then and that is, unfortunately, a universal problem.

but it IS GOLD - no?
You’re right, it does sound crass. What is your proof for this, please?
What do you mean “What is your proof for this, please?”
Let me guess. You’re SDA.
huh? what is SDA?

I understand that Sister (Christians (Catholics) have been wearing engagement and wedding rings for centuries.)

However; why does the Bible say don’t and it is acceptably disregarded in society?

Please - don’t get me wrong - my wife literally has a certified hunk of ice on her hand as well …

Let me explain this …
I am partially of Italian heritage (first one from my fathers side to be born in the USA)

In life I have seen so many directives from the Bible be tossed off for numerous reasons.

I started this because I thought it would be easier to find an understanding …

I could have started with
“Why did money allow my father to have a Catholic funeral when his second wife is STILL alive”

To cut to the point - I am trying to seek wisdom and reasonable understanding!

These are issues NO RELIGION has been able to explain to me … without insulting another one.

I have tried to understand … I have searched many faiths for answers from Catholics, to the Greek Orthodox, to the Methodists, to the Mormon’s. and even to the Baha’i …

Hey! no ones got no answers! 🤷

All these people profess having the knowledge - still no answers!

Perchè il mistero? Dove è la saggezza?

huh? what is SDA?
Seventh Day Adventist. This is a common rant among them. Sorry.

The business of jewelry is a disciplinary thing rather than a doctrinal one – even in Scripture. Many Christians eschew ostentation. I am a member of the Confraternity of Penitents. We are permitted to wear a wedding ring and required to wear a cross. We do not wear any other jewelry.
However; why does the Bible say don’t and it is acceptably disregarded in society?
Again, this is a disciplinary matter. From time to time in history sumptuary laws have been enforced to limit ostentation. And anyway: why does “society” have to follow a Biblical dress code?

All these people profess having the knowledge - still no answers! I think you are not asking a question that has a direct answer because there is a lot of wiggle room in interpreting the passage you cite. Catholics are the last people you should ask the question of as you do because although we are biblical literalists, we are not “literalistic” – namely, we accept the literal intent of the author but do not apply each word as if it were necessarily applicable to every circumstance in every time and every place. IOW: modesty and lack of ostentation are the PRINCIPLES conveyed in the passage you have locked your sights on. The SPECIFICS mentioned are particular to THAT church at THAT time. We extract the principle.

Let me whole heartily THANK YOU …

I guess I am too pragmatic at time.

There are too many theological slants to one Book and it frustrates me to no end.

The one thing I try to do is build my faith on wisdom and hope to see past the slants and angles that twist the facts

Well I am old school, too, probably about 10 years more old school than you, and I distinctly remember women wearing expensive rings, fancy hats, jewelry, and mink coats and stoles to Church. In fact, they were dressed to the nines, especially on Christmas and Easter. And the men were dressed in nice suits and ties and good leather shoes, mostly all of them sporting a hat, which they took off when they entered the church. And I did not come from a wealthy neighborhood. We just have more of these things today.

I know that at one time the gold and diamond took the place of a bride price. It was a form of security if the groom backed out or the husband deserted the family. It was a way to prove that the man (or his family) was serious in the offer of marriage.

May I ask? What is meant by “was Catholic?”

:o I gave up on incorporated religion (they tend to be too rich and needy at the same time.) and have been focusing on building my faith and Biblical understanding for over 20 years.

I comically say to my friends that I religiously brush my teeth …

Most of my challenging questions over the years have been targeted towards the Protestants …

I suppose I am becoming a bit more like my grandparents - getting older and seeing the conclusion of life rounding the corner and double checking my faith in God and how I have come to know Him.

The one thing I am TOTALLY certain of is there REALLY IS A GOD - every time I look at my wife and know how she came to me tells me that God finally allowed me to have my own family!

After many years God gave me exactly what I had been praying for for over 20 years - I just had to figure out how to ask the right way!
