Why isn't there a Mass on Good Friday?

Hi,

Good question! The omission of Mass marks, in the mind of the Church, the deep sorrow with which she keeps the anniversary of the Sacrifice of Calvary. The denuded altar, the solemnity of the prayers for all those for whom He died, the reverencing of the cross or crucifix—these take the place of the usual festal liturgy. All of this underscores the fact that Good Friday is unlike any……other……day!
