Why I've come to appreciate Fr James Martin

I confess I still cringe at homosexual PDA’s when they present in the media or real life. I was raised in an environment that was very adamant about the deviancy and grave sinfulness of homosexuality. There was little talk of the difference between the act and the orientation though. I just accepted by default that this condition was a choice just as any other sin is a choice.

When I first heard of the ministry of Fr James Martin, I assumed that he was either ignorant of this or was in fact an evil infiltrator trying to undermine Church teaching. This seemed to be confirmed by the Catholic media commentators and even high profile clergy.

Perhaps it is age or perhaps the influence of my offspring perspectives which seem to make the distinction between the orientation and the act without much difficulty, but I feel quite ashamed of my own past attitude to gay people so I’ve taken a leap and ordered a copy of Fr Martins book… Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.

It is one area of my faith that I want to become more respectful, compassionate and sensitive about in the coming year.

I will offer some more reflections once I’ve read the book.
