Why Jesus snorted at Lazarus

As far as I can tell, there are three reasons:

1. He wished to show future generations, who would believe Him to be a spirit, that He is true Man just as He is true God
2. He wished to show future generations, who would slowly lose their sense of sin, that they must be angry at evil and despise their sins
3. He wished to show future generations, who would question His identity, that He hates evil and had come to save sinners from sin and death

This is a problem with working with translations.

The NRSV has this verse saying…

John 11:33
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved.

The footnote says…

11:33-35 The NRSV translates Jesus’ responses to Mary’s tears as greatly disturbed (Gr. brimaomai) and deeply moved (Gr. tarrasso) (v. 33). While the translations seem to suggest Jesus’ deep compassion (see v. 36), the Greek verbs used here usually communicate agitation and indignation. It is important not to sentimentalize Jesus’ reasction and his tears (v. 35). These verses highlight the bitter cost and power of death in human lives and so underscore the significance of Jesus’ ultimate victory over death.
