why Linus?

I’ve come to understand that the Pope that followed St. Peter was St. Linus. Why would Linus be chosen when some of the apostles that were with Jesus were still alive? Just trying to get an understanding of the early papacy.
 
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Church tradition holds that Peter’s successor was chosen via a “So You Think You Can Dance”-style dance-off, where each contender was given 30 seconds to “Dance For Your Ecclesiastical Life.” As Linus was much younger than any of the remaining Apostles, the contest was pretty much his to lose.

I can accept that theory, makes sense.
 
Perhaps it was in recognition that Linus is an especially holy name, since Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, would eventually bear it? 😉

Since I am named after St. Linus perhaps I can be of assistance.😃 (BTW my name really is Hail Linus).

The following is just my personal view:
  • There was nothing unusual about this choice. In fact, when Peter left his original Church in Antioch he chose St. Evodius as his successor rather than a fellow Apostle.
  • Naming an Apostle as a successor to Peter in Rome would be to waste the value of an Apostle. The Church in Rome was already established and just needed to be left in good hands. The Apostles were needed out in the field making new Churches.
 
I heard that it was a bear to get Pope Linus to put all his trust in the Lord and let go of his blue blanket, that he kept for insecurity reasons. 😃

Can someone give me the reference to the first point made?
 
Because each Apostle held a different office, and Peter’s was separate and superior to theirs. If the Holy Spirit decided on another Apostle, the decision might have undermined the authority of the Pope or his uniqueness.

And because the Holy Spirit wanted it that way.

“And Evodius having been established the first [bishop] of the Antiochians, Ignatius flourished at this time” (Eusebius, History of the Church, III, 22).

The Ignatius Eusebius mentions is Ignatius of Antioch, the famous Early Church Father (ECF). Origen (another ECF) calls Ignatius the second bishop, after Peter (Homilies IV, in Luc., III, 938A). Ignatius, in his youth, was a disciple of the Apostle John.

Am I allowed to enter a Catholic parish during the day and talk to the Priest to have my questions answered? Whats the best way to be able to have my questions answered in person?

I would instead call your local parish and ask to set up an appt with a priest. This way he will be ableto set aside time for you without distractions. Just walking in you would be taking a chance a priest was available. In many parishes the priests are very busy and pulled twelve ways. An appt is the best bet.

In the meantime, feel free to keep asking questions here!

Sure. Every parish has a parish office attached to the church. Knock on the door or ring the doorbell. Ask the office secretary for an appointment to talk to the pastor or one of the priests. Or you may be lucky enough to find a priest on site when you arrive (but they are very busy so they might not be there). If so, ask if he has time to sit down and chat for a few minutes. All the priests I have known consider it a priviledge to speak with a young person with questions about the faith. Most young people couldn’t care less about spiritual matters, so to meet one that does is great.

I see, well thank you. I am a man that is currently lost in his beliefs and am seeking for truth. I’m reading the bible and praying and am starting to lean towards the Roman Catholic Church but am afraid because of my background. I was born and raised a member of the LDS Church and have been active my whole life. I even served a 2 year mission in Montreal, Quebec. It’s been a year since my return and find myself at a crossroad. I’ve been raised to believe a certain way, but have found that I don’t truly believe it. I’ve prayed many atimes to seek for the true church, but I don’t think i understand the Spirit very well because I feel like God doesn’t “talk” to me. Any suggestions on how to build my faith towards God and His church?
