Some love God for the reward of eternal life. They are mercenaries.
Others love God out of fear of punishment. They are slaves.
A few love God for His Own Self. They are His children.
Just as a wife loves her husband not because of what he gives her but because who he is, so too, we must love God not because of what He gives us but because of who He is: God.
Some love their neighbors for the merit of good works. They are thieves.
Others love their neighbors out of fear of God’s wrath. They are waywards.
A few love their neighbors as their own selves. They are God’s children.
Just as a husband loves his wife not because of what she gives him but because of who she is, s too, we must love our neighbors not because of what they give us but because of who they are: our brethern.
God’s love is the love of a lover, of a husband, of a wife, of a father, of a mother, of a brother, of a sister, of an aunt, of an uncle, of a grandfather, of a grandmother, of a best friend, of a benefactor, of a godparent, of an ally, of a companion, of a coworker, of a teacher, of a guide, of a guardian, of a soldier, of a warrior, of a peasant, of a prince, of a princess, of a king, of a queen, of a hero, of a heroine, of oneself, and of every type of love. We must imitate Him!
