Of course, there is no direct mention that she is the same women caught in adultery and brought before Jesus or the women who washed Jesus’ feet and dried with her hair.In either case, the person is a known sinner.Still, from the overall picture, it can be reasonably assumed that both are the same person and is Mary Magdalene only. May be that Jesus want to give a message that repented sinners are equally to be given due importance…
It was Mary, the sister of Lazarus who annointed Jesus’ feet. John was able to name many of the unnamed in the synoptic gospels as they didn’t need “protective anonimity” by the time John wrote his gospel.

Was “protective anonymity” a Thing in the mid-1st century?

NONE of us were there so until I go to Heaven and have the saint tell me I’m wrong, 🤷

Is this a controversial theory?
Nope.

For instance, we only know Peter cut off Malchus’s ear because John recorded it. If Mark, or Matthew, or Luke recorded it, then Peter would be in great danger from the Romans.

Why? Malchus was the High Priest’s servant, which means that he was most likely a Jew, not a Roman. The Romans would not have cared.

Probably meant Peter would have been in danger from the Jews.

Attempted murder of anyone was a crime according to Roman law. Remember the woman caught in adultery?

Of all the women in the gospels, only Mary Magdalene is depicted as a sinned one.
As well as the woman caught in adultery whom Jesus saved from stoning…the woman at the well who had five husbands and was currently living with a man…the woman who washed His feet with her tears and dried them with her hair (I think of her as Magdalene)…the Canaanite woman who cried out to Him and he cast the demon out of her daughter…Eve, the first woman of all to sin, and now she holds a title of being our “mother” as well as Mary. Eve, our earthly mother, Mary, our heavenly mother.

John says it was Mary of Bethany.

The Anointing at Bethany.a
1
  • Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.b
    2
They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.c
    3
Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus* and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.d

Those two are the same.

There are several different Marys:

  1. *]Mary, the mother of Jesus
    *]Mary, wife of Cleophas
*]Mary Magdalene (healed and delivered of seven evil spirits)
*]Sisters Martha and Mary (anoints the Lord with ointment)

    John 19:25
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother (1), and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas (2), and Mary Magdalen (3).

    John 11:1-45
11 Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary (4) and Martha her sister.
2 (And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

I know there was this, but there was also “the woman who was a sinner” at Simon the Pharisee’s house, and Jesus, knowing his silent judgmental thoughts about her, taught him a lesson on loving and forgiving more, and He said how this woman had covered His feet with kisses since He came in and dried them with her hair, and this “sinful” woman also anointed His feet with perfume. This was when Jesus said, “Those who are forgiven little love little, and those who are forgiven more love more.”

  1. The comma! I had read that it could be this way:
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother (1), and his mother’s sister (2), Mary of Cleophas (3), and Mary Magdalen (4).

I think then the phrasing would have been with another and:

25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother’s sister, [and] Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.

Salome, the mother of James and John is Mother Mary’s sister.
Mary, Jesus’s mother, I thought was an only child, and her mother had her later in life.
Unless you mean “sister” as in close friend or relative.

Of all the women in the gospels, only Mary Magdalene is depicted as a sinned one. What is the significance of the fact that she only got the unique privilege of first seeing the resurrected Jesus, the very foundation of our belief?
Magdala is the famous place where fish were salted “pickled”. If Jesus didn’t grant this lovely lady from Magdala this special privilege he or his apostles may not have had the privilege to purchase salted fish 😃
