Why must Catholic weddings be in a church?

Please explain why a catholic wedding must be celebrated in a catholic church. Why if it is performed by a catholic priest can a catholic wedding not be done in a park, on a beach or in the banquet hall of the reception?

This is a question posed by many since locale weddings are becoming more and more popular.
 
Hi,

Ever wonder why ordinations to the priesthood are not done at the beach or in the park? We don’t ordinarily think of them happening anywhere but in a church because they are about God and the church is designed specifically for the worship of God and nothing else. SO with marriage!

We do not consider marriage to be a secular event in which two people enter into a partnership for a period of time and maybe even until death so long things go well.

Catholic marriage reflects the love of Christ for His people, the Church, for whom He shed His blood on the cross. Catholic marriage is all about Him. The setting for a Catholic wedding is not arbitrary as our secular culture sees it. The context of a Catholic wedding is the House of God which is designed for worshiping Him by the celebration of His passion which we call the Mass. Quite frankly, no other context is good enough!
