Why must the priest consume BOTH the Body and Blood during Mass?

Hello out there,

I can’t remember the specific reason why the priest must consume BOTH the Body and Blood of Our Lord, while the people may consume under only one form. I know that the priest must consume in order for the sacrifice to be valid, but why under both species?? Can anyone help me out? God bless!

I don’t know for sure so this is speculation on my part, but this is what I think:

Because Jesus consumed both and the priest is in persona Christi, then the priest must consume both.

The people however, are not standing in the person of Christ, so we are not required to consume both. And because we receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in just one species, it is acceptable for us to consume just one.

Maybe someone else can confirm my line of thinking.
