Why no circumcision in the desert after the Exodus

Is there any theological reason why those born in the desert during the Exodus were not circumcised? This fact is stated in Joshua 5:5.
 
Hi Deacon Joseph,

There is no theological reason. In verse 7, it says that they could not be circumcised because they were travelling. One must suppose that they had to be on their toes against possible enemies and were often on the go, so that they cold not get the rest necessary after circumcision. (v.8) Perhaps too they did not circumcise babies in those days.

Note that they were not travelling all the time.
Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would go onward; 37 but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not go onward till the day that it was taken up. 38 For throughout all their journeys the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.

Still they had to be ready to go at any time-- they didn’t know when the cloud would take off. I for one really wouldn’t want to do a lot of walking or donkey-riding for quite a while after such an operation…
 
can you imagine what it would be like to get desert sand in the wound?:eek:
