I was listening to Father Mitch on EWTN open line yesterday and topic was automatic excommunication with the knowing sin of an abortion. I looked it up and saw it was, but of the 8 different things one can do to merit this grave action, murder was not one. Why then can you kill your neighbor, you can just see a priest when act of abortion you have to go through a Bishop to be forgiven of this act of murder? Thanks God Bless
Michael

Dear Michael,

The Church is in no way trying to diminish the seriousness of murder. But the purpose of excommunication is to amplify the evil in a particular act so that people will refrain from such activity. Murder is so obvious an evil, that in our culture it simply doesn’t need the amplification that abortion does. No one can get away with defending murder as a choice—yet.
