I was approached by a former Catholic. She was preaching to me about how Saturday Sabbath is correct and that Constantine created the sabbath day sunday. Her religion prints out fliers showing an actual calender and timeline. It sounds like they are very big on Saturday being the sabbath day. I dont know which religon she is but it isnt mormon, jeovah, seventh day adventist or jewish. Anyhow, any insight at all would be nice.

Crazy Age 3,

The New Testament refers in several places to the Lord’s Day (Sunday, the day of the resurrection), both in general and as a time of gathering for worship (I Cor 16:2 and Revelation 1:10, for example).

Actually, the Sabbath has not been abolished; paragraphs 2168-2173 speak of it as distinct from the Lord’s Day. In particular, it is called “a day of protest against the servitude of work and the worship of money.”

She was very sure that Constantine had started “sunday” sabbath. She told me to check my history because it is there.

The burden is on her to provide you with historical evidence to prove her claim.
Saying something on a flier is not evidence. She won’t be able to, of course, because the claim is rubbish.

Poor old Constantine gets the blame for so many things. He apparently started the Roman Catholic religion after repressing the true Church of the Apostles which has since been resurrected as he Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, SDA, etc., etc…

Jesus must be kicking Himself for saying the Gates of Hell would not prevail against the Church, well, blushing at His mistake anyway!

there are seven notes in a key, but only when you get to the eighth, do you reach completion. The first sabbath (saturday) symbolizes the final stage in the REcreation of mankind WITHIN human history. But it is the SECOND Sabbath, the eighth day, in which the Redemption ulitmately completes itself, the true and ultimate rest in the New Creation. There’s a parallel between the first day of REcreation and the last day (the eighth) of the REcreation. The first recreation was the Flood, where the earth was destroyed by WATER, a cleansing act. In the eighth recreation of man, it will be destroyed by FIRE, because it will be a judgement of man. Hence, Christ compares the days of Noah with the end of the world, similarly does st. Peter in 2 Pet. 3.

Sometimes the answer is, it’s just not. I don’t really think very many people here want to identify themselves with the Seventh Day Adventists, a weirdo sect of all time that actually thinks it is evil to worship on Sunday. Walk away from an argument like that. The Catholic Church is the pre-eminent denomination in the world. It does not have to defend itself against miinscule backward ridiculous sects.

Unlike the RCC. Until 1966, all Fridays had been obligatory days of abstinence from meat on pain of mortal sin. Since 1966, all Fridays during Lent remain obligatory days of abstinence from meat on pain of mortal sin.

According to the SDA, the Catholics, Methodists, Baptists and ALL churches who gather for worship on Sunday morning are paying tribue to The Beast.

that’s a DISCIPLINARY issue, not DOCTRINE. When we fast and abstain is mutable thing. It’s things like:

God is One in Nature and Three in Persons,

or,

The grace of Justification can be lost and IS lost through every grevious sin

that are irrevocable.

can someone here please explain the difference between DISCIPLINE and DOCTRINE? i just don’t have the time for this stuff.

surely, our dear friend Jimmy Akin must have written an article about the difference b/ discipline and doctrine, or some other apologist? It’s a common attack that easily diffused.

but it is also off topic. we should start new thread for that?

spauline,

re: “…that’s a DISCIPLINARY issue, not DOCTRINE. “

Setting forth what action is a mortal sin is not doctrinal?

Well, she really needs to read her Apostolic Fathers.
Ignatius to the Magnesians:
Let us therefore no longer keep the Sabbath after the Jewish manner, and rejoice in days of idleness; for “he that does not work, let him not eat.” For say the [holy] oracles, “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread.” But let every one of you keep the Sabbath after a spiritual manner, rejoicing in meditation on the law, not in relaxation of the body, admiring the workmanship of God, and not eating things prepared the day before, nor using lukewarm drinks, and walking within a prescribed space, nor finding delight in dancing and plaudits which have no sense in them. And after the observance of the Sabbath, let every friend of Christ keep the Lord’s Day as a festival, the resurrection-day, the queen and chief of all the days [of the week].
Epistle of Barnabas:
Your present Sabbaths are not acceptable to Me, but that is which I have made, [namely this,] when, giving rest to all things, I shall make a beginning of the eighth day, that is, a beginning of another world. Wherefore, also, we keep the eighth day with joyfulness,
the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead. And when He had manifested Himself, He ascended into the heavens.
These are mid-2nd century Christian authors. Constantine hadn’t even been born, and Christianity was still illegal.

Hi crazyage3,

My understanding is that in Ancient Rome it was illegal to be a christian, punishable by death. (Seems a bit harsh, but apparently it is still the case in some Islamic countries.) And in Ancient Rome, Sunday was the day of rest. It only seems natural to me that the early Christians would have adopted a Sunday Sabbath… because if they didn’t, they would be found out and killed.

So, the fight for survival meant that Sunday had to be adopted as the Sabbath. Add to that, Sunday was also the day that Jesus rose from the dead, so it seems sensible to me to have a Sunday Sabbath.

Any attempt to try and revert back to a Saturday Sabbath could cause a split in the Church and in society, which I imagine is something that the Catholic Church wouldn’t risk.

Charlie, I have to disagree… Christians were put to death constantly for their beliefs, why would they change this one belief in order to avoid persecution, while there were so many others they were still being persecuted for? You will find that the early Christians were meticulous in their desire to continue doing what they had been taught, even if that meant death.

Christians worship Christ on Sunday or the 8th day due to the resurrection and hence “re-creation” of the world. This is why no where in the Bible are NT Christians (ie. followers of Christ after His death) ever asked or commanded to keep the Jewish Sabbath.

Even by the time of the book of Revelation being written, Sunday was known as “The Lord’s Day”.

Disobedience to the successors of St. Peter was the sinful issues not the meat.
