I would like to know why the Catholic church has declared that having sex before marriage is a sin. If all the feelings for the person are as intact as they would be in a marriage, why does not having a ring on someone’s finger make it a sin?

Hi,

Marriage is not the coming together of a man and woman to unite their feelings. Their feelings may be intact now, but what is to guarantee that they will remain intact? Feelings come and go. Marriage must be based on something more stable than feelings. Marriage consists of the offering to God of their responsible and total commitment to each other until death.

Having sex with each other outside of marriage lacks commitment and responsibility. It is the behavior of irresponsible, immature people.

I suggest that you read the book, “Good News About Sex and Marriage” by Christopher West, available through shop.catholic.com or by phone, 888 291 8000. You really need to read this book.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
