How about - it’s a ritual that, as practiced in most parishes, is a contrived, feel-good, “I’m OK; You’re OK” vestige of 60’s coolness that fails as a ritual and fails as an actual expression of peace for the sole purpose of satisfying a residual baby-boomer need to be hip.
I particularly love it when those cool 50+ somethings extend their first two fingers in the Anti-Vietnam War peace sign, but ironically turn it around in the British fashion of flipping the bird!
Why just last week the usher at my home church continued up the aisle well into the Agnus Dei…It just made me feel so at peace! GACK!
