When I made the post, I was talking about FOR ADULTS. Other than RCIA, there is nothing.

Adults need fellowship, too

TexanKnight: I agree 100%. I was discussing the issue with my pastor and told him we really need to provide more for our adult Catholics. I am having the Small Faith Communities Director and speak at our parent night meetings.

It, varies from parish to parish, however, you will find Sunday School and “Agape Feast” or some sort of fellowship more often, in the Eastern Catholic Churches!

If you haven’t been to an Eastern Catholic Church, GO!

I like the Coptic Catholic Liturgy most, personally!

Peace and Love in Christ :highprayer:
The reason for Agape feasts is that people are hungry.

In the East we still fast from midnight instead of just one hour.

Fontana? I currently reside in Riverside, CA but born and raised in San Diego,CA
Yep. I grew up in Montclair, though. I’m only in El Paso cause the Army forced me to be lol. I’m returning to CA sometime this fall, once my enlistment ends. I’ve thought about going to school in Riverside.

Don’t complain. Begin a program yourself rather than waiting for someone else to do it.
Bible study, for example. You don’t have to teach it. Get someone knowledge to teach it
– you be the organizer. Or start a men’s club. Or join St. Vincent de Paul.

Don’t expect “fellowship” at Mass. The Mass is for worship of Almighty God. The focus is on Him. Join one of the service groups in the parish. Or start a new one. That’s where friendships are formed.

Here’s a very active parish - maybe it will give you some ideas. The Institute of Theology is a great program. Instructors are from all over the diocese. It’s all about adult education.

I should not have to. If Protestant Churches can figure out ways to do this, then so can Catholics. It should be offered.

I work over 50 hours a week and spend 5-7 hours a week driving to work and back. I am also a Major in the Guard AND have a family. I do not have time to organize something that I believe should already be offered. Think of how much stronger we would be as a Church if our members were more informed and had more opportunities to study together.

Agreed that we need more “fellowship.” Some parishes are “warmer” than others, but I think ALL have something to offer. K of C, Bible Study… Ask your priest if there are any
clubs or anything like that at your parish. If there isn’t, maybe he’ll find someone to get the ball rolling if you’re too busy. Maybe just “putting it out there” will make it happen.

Good luck.

Getting to church on isolated weeknights for the adult classes is an organizational problem for me. I keep forgetting, but would really enjoy getting involved in more parish activities. An adult Sunday school class after Mass would really fit the ticket. It would also be valuable for recent graduates of RCIA, to keep them involved.

However, such a class would have to be run by qualified people, not just a volunteer who might have some unorthodox ideas. I just hate seeing such a thing being run by people who have one foot in Protestantism. Since we live in the real world, it is easy for that to happen. My membership here has helped me immensely, in shedding some of the weird ideas I picked up from my association with Mormons.

When I first joined this board, I was arguing the Virginity of Mary. 😊

This is what worked for us too. We tried different times. We finally decided that the best time was between Masses, when the kids were in CCE. There were some logistical issues (the classrooms were already full of kids) and some personnel issues (some of the best teachers were already committed with CCE) but once we worked those out, the program has been very well received and well attended.

Ahhhh…Montclair? My girlfriend lives in Temple City,CA. Near Arcadia and Pasadena? I understand…I too was in the military 1993-2003. I served in the U.S. Air Force. I also lived in Texas: San Antonio and Witchita Falls.

Then you were in a nicer city than El Paso! Blech lol

The adults at my church meet once during the week and Sundays. The children CCE classes are held on Saturday mornings. When CCE is over the kids have their youth meetings, events, programs etc., all on Saturdays. Sundays after mass, families usually go to the event hall for coffee, donuts and are able to buy lunch as well. So I guess Sundays is more of our family time/fellowship time. Throughout the year my church hold dances, festivals etc… I think it depends on how dedicated the members and priest are to take on these task. It is hard work.

We do have Sunday “school,” CCD, and also, at our parish, a wonderful Adult Education class on Sundays. I don’t know of any Catholic parishes that don’t have some form of Sunday School.
Blessings,
Kathryn Ann:heaven:

My parish always seems to have an adult class of one nature or the other occurring; whether it’s a series on St. John’s Revelations or a formal bible study or whatever. It can be a little difficult GETTING to the class on weekdays, but I’m definitely thankful they’re available.
Coming from the LDS church as well, it’s very much a relief to not feel the social pressure to attend one thing or another. Sunday school and primary/young womens/relief society were never an option. I went or I was questioned by a ton of people as to why I didn’t show up, especially if they saw me in sacrament meeting. It’s wonderful to go to classes out of a healthy religious desire instead of fear of disapproval.

This was mentioned in the former LDS forum

I was curious, why is there no “Sunday School” in the Catholic Church?
My daughter used to attend a faith formation during the week. It has been changed to Sunday afternoon and the children are all delivered to 5pm mass with the adults.🙂

In my Lutheran parish, we have Sunday School for the children and in addition, the pastor teaches adult Sunday School.
