Why not happy?

I just had a conversation with someone who said they weren’t happy, and they don’t understand why God created us and not allow us to be happy in this life. They feel like because they are constantly battling their worldly desires, they’re not happy and don’t get why God made them this way.

Can y’all help me explain it in a cogent but loving way? Thanks!
 
Perhaps he needs to reframe what he understands “happy” to mean. Christ gives us the beatitudes, which tell us where true happiness lies. Focusing on the virtues and beatitudes will go a long way to helping your friends understand real happiness.

Such a person does not know what it means to be filled with the Spirit, and to walk in the power of His grace. Such a person tries to battle flesh with flesh, a losing battle.

Recommend a life in the Spirit seminar.
 
God did create us to be happy but because Adam and Eve committed the original sin, we now live in a fallen world. But I doubt that would go very far with the type of person your describe.

It has been my experience that people with your friend’s view don’t really care to see it any other way. I would simply tell him to bring that question in prayer to Jesus. Then God can handle his confusion
 
Thanks for all of your answers. What is a Life in the Spirit seminar like? I don’t know if he’s willing to go to this; he’s turned off by “charismatic” things. Unfortunately.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him.

Just two cents. Our lives are not perfect; therefore we will have struggles and we will have sadness; but our true happiness and peace is not existing solely within ourselves. Our joy lies in being one with God. We can relieve our sadness and fears by knowing the simple truth of God’s love for us, no matter the circumstance. If your friend does not understand the true beauty of God/s love for him/her; even ultimate worldly items will not make him/her happy. That would be my explanation.

Permanent happiness is unreachable in an entropic world.

The goal should not be earthly happiness but everlasting life.
