Oddly, I find myself in the position of being in general agreement with both Amado and Bob!
I never thought that I would see the day.
The Ukrainian church is certainly mature enough to govern itself, and the Orthodox should pursue unity as an autonomous church with their own Patriarch first. If the UGCC wants to likewise have a Patriarch (which it does), well OK, recognition from Rome might help stimulate unity of the Orthodox as a reaction. So it could be a good thing.
Anyway, (personally) I am not of the general opinion that the multiplication of Patriarchates is actually necessary or desirable along national lines, but that seems to be the standard practice for Byzantine-Slav churches. If that’s what it takes to put the house in order, so be it.
Ukrainian nationalism plays a far bigger role in what’s going on in the church there than it should. They feel tompled-on from everyone and from every direction, they have a strong desire to get out from underneath all of that.
Originally the Metropolitan of Kyiv had a much broader responsibility than the area of Ukraine, it’s a shame to see what has happened to it over the years.
