Why oil?

I was looking at this website (I’m sure most of you are familiar with it!), looking at the pictures with statues with the oil and that. My questions is, why does oil play an important role here and not water or something?

My guess is because oil is used for anointing. Messiah or Christos meaning “anointed one”
