Praying for others…have you been asked to pray for someone in need of prayers…and did you comply? Why do Catholics pray to Mary? Why not pray straight to God?

Praying to Mary is asking her for her help. No man is an island and no christian is an island as well. There is strength when we seek help from others. If we only prayed to God we might only act as individuals and no one would know what the other needs are. When we act together and act as a communion there is power there. Remember the words when two or three are gathered together in My Name. Catholics and Orthodox as do the Eastern Catholics see in the Holy Mother of God a person who has the greatest relationship ever with the Almighty. It is natural and good to access this person and to ask for her help and prayers. It is also the same to ask people within your communion to pray for your intentions. Mary and the Church act in the same manner. Since Mary and the Church comprises what the Communion is then it is to your benefit to ask for their help and prayers. You are not alone. There is a communion of believers you can call upon. Why do Catholics pray to Mary? Why not pray straight to God?

Not to make light of your inquiry, but here is a nice little story of a Marian ‘apparition’ of sorts, not particularly authoratative, but from someone you’ve probably heard of, and who has some general street cred:Why do Catholics pray to Mary? Why not pray straight to God?

"Let It Be"
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Sir Paul McCartney/the BeatlesLet it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Yeah let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Actually, he’s talking about a dream he had of his mother, not the Blessed Virgin. Not to make light of your inquiry, but here is a nice little story of a Marian ‘apparition’ of sorts, not particularly authoratative, but from someone you’ve probably heard of, and who has some general street cred:

Well, actually, we don’t pray “straight to God” we pray to the Father through Christ, Our Lord–just to give you some perspective on the whole prayer thing. Why do Catholics pray to Mary? Why not pray straight to God?

I know that Mary is a tough concept in a Protestant’s mind. You have been led by those who are removed from the Catholic Church and so praying to the saints would seem very foreign to you. Many Protestants that come into the Catholic Church still find it hard to shake the teachings against praying to Mary. When we pray to the saints we pray “with” them. The word “to pray” has a double meaning. In reference to the saints it means “to ask” coming from the old English and is still used in the legal system. When we pray to God we give ourselves to Him in adoration. This is not done with the saints. The saints, of which Mary is the highest since she was given the greatest honor from God, are a part of our prayer group just like you have here on earth. Many say that the saints can’t hear us. Well I say that no where does it say that but it does say that Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. Death never separates the vine from the branches. In fact people who have gone before us are more alive in Christ than we are.Why do Catholics pray to Mary? Why not pray straight to God?

This is a scriptural account whereby Mary was asked by someone for help and she went to her Son. Only God performs miracles but through the intercession of those who ask (pray) for the help. In this case it was Mary. Great example taken from Scripture. The only objection would be whether or not Mary can hear us. The bible says in Revelation 5:8 that the bowls of incense represent the prayers of the saints and are being brought to the throne of God. Prayers of what saints? Those in heaven do not need prayers so those prayer are from us. Anyway, just thought I’d throw my two cents in here since you hit the nail on the head here.Remind yourself of Jesus first miracle, it was through Mary’s interceding. Mary is the mother of God, God obeyed and still does to this day obeys her mother. Just like Jesus listened to her mother on the wedding at Cana, whenever we ask her for help with our heart in on our hands, she goes and asks her son to help us out.
Here’s a perspective that I believe may help–it is St. Thomas Aquinas’ Catechism:Why do Catholics pray to Mary? Why not pray straight to God?

“HAIL MARY”
We must now consider concerning the first part of this prayer that in ancient times it was no small event when Angels appeared to men; and that man should show them reverence was especially praiseworthy. Thus, it is written to the praise of Abraham that he received the Angels with all courtesy and showed them reverence. But that an Angel should show reverence to a man was never heard of until the Angel reverently greeted the Blessed Virgin saying: "Hail."
THE ANGEL’S DIGNITY
In olden time an Angel would not show reverence to a man, but a man would deeply revere an Angel. This is because Angels are greater than men, and indeed in three ways. First, they are greater than men in dignity. This is because the Angel is of a spiritual nature: “Who makest Thy angels spirits.”[4] But, on the other hand, man is of a corruptible nature, for Abraham said: “I will speak to my Lord, whereas I am dust and ashes.”[5] It was not fitting, therefore, that a spiritual and incorruptible creature should show reverence to one that is corruptible as is a man. Secondly, an Angel is closer to God. The Angel, indeed, is of the family of God, and as it were stands ever by Him: “Thousands of thousands ministered to Him, and ten thousand times a hundred thousand stood before Him.”[6] Man, on the other hand, is rather a stranger and afar off from God because of sin: “I have gone afar off.”[7] Therefore, it is fitting that man should reverence an Angel who is an intimate and one of the household of the King.
cin.org/users/james/ebooks/master/aquinas/apray-hm.htmThen, thirdly, the Angels far exceed men in the fullness of the splendor of divine grace. For Angels participate in the highest degree in the divine light: “Is there any numbering of His soldiers? And upon whom shall not His light arise?”[8] Hence, the Angels always appear among men clothed in light, hut men on the contrary, although they partake somewhat of the light of grace, nevertheless do so in a much slighter degree and with a certain obscurity.*** It was, therefore, not fitting that an Angel should show reverence to a man until it should come to pass that one would be found in human nature who exceeded the Angels*** in these three points in which we have seen that they excel over men–and this was the Blessed Virgin. To show that she excelled the Angels in these, the Angel desired to show her reverence, and so he said: "Ave (Hail)."
