Why pray to a saint when I can "dial direct" to God?

Growing up with Baptist principles there are some things about Catholicism that I just don’t get. Since I am used to praying to God & Jesus and having my prayers answered, why should I learn what patron saint to pray to, or pray to Mary? It’s seems like the long way to go… since you want God to help you, why not just “dial direct”? I don’t get it.

By all means, continue to “dial direct”. But wouldn’t it be nice to have others “dialing in” for you, too? You probably ask your friends and family members to pray for you and for your intentions. Similarly, you can ask Mary and the saints to join in. But, since we can’t visit them in person or even call or email them, “praying” to Mary and the Saints is how we go about asking for their intercessory prayer.

For more on this, see these short tracts:
Praying to the Saints
The Intercession of the Saints
