Why pray with a Ten bead rosary?

I carry a full Rosary but will often just use the first set of beads. It’s all the same anyway.

Hi , why do some people pray with the ten bead rosary and not the full one ?
Which do you prefer ?
Are there any dis/advantages ?

Prayer counters come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and not all that look like a rosary are intended for the Dominican/Latin rosary, either.

What is better is what works for you to remind you to pray, what to pray, and to be an aid in your prayer so that you have to count less.

The Minimal Rosary

A decade is the fundamental unit for the Dominican Rosary. Therefore a 10-bead + Crucifix Rosary is the minimal unit for counting.

A crucifix is a fundamental part of the Rosary prayers. Thus a crucifix and 10 beads is the “minimum” for a rosary counter. The Our Father and Glory Be do not need beads of their own, since they are not repeated. The Three Hail Mary’s in the “stub” can be counted on the non-connected arms of the crucifix, which also doubles as the “bead” for the Our Father and Glory Be bracketing the decade.

If every prayer were beaded, it would be C-1-3-1-J-1-10-2-10-2-10-2-10-2-10-1-(J).

Some friars, who say the three traditional sets of mysteries routinely, carry a rosary of 15 decades. I’ve met one whose rosary was 20 - he says all 4 sets daily.

Other Catholic Beads
Chotki
33, 50, 100, 150, or even 300 main knots and/or beads; divider beads every 10th, 20th, ot 25th as an option. A tassel or cross is common, issuing from the join of the loop.

Unlike the Rosary, the chotki is often blessed to be worn as a bracelet - this is a blessing upon the chotki jointly with its wearer.

Also known by several other names. 109 “rungs” of wood bound into a ladder with leather “rails”.
4 flaps for the 4 gospels
9 rungs for the 9 choirs of angels (and the 9 months in the womb)
12 rungs for the 12 apostles.
38 rungs for the 36 weeks and 2 days in the womb
33 rungs for the 33 years of Christ’s incarnation
17 rungs for the 17 prophets (16 OT + St. John the Forerunner) who prophesied the coming of Christ.
I’ve seen a few lesovkas done as beads with the groupings separated by knots, and as knots separated by space alone.

My Preference
My fingers. I’ve got 10 of them. Never without them.

A ten bead one is easier for me to use when I’m walking through the neighborhood during my daily exercise.

I should have been more specific: Right now, exercise is part of my physical therapy following a spinal fusion last month. I’m supposed to be walking, but I have to use either a cane or a walker. A ten bead rosary, being smaller, doesn’t get tangled in my rehab equipment. And when I first got permission to walk around the block, I was so scared of falling I just used my ten fingers! Wasn’t about to release that death grip on the walker even to move a couple of fingers from bead to bead until I felt a little stronger and got a little more confident!

It’s the prayers and meditations done during the recitation of the Rosary, not the actual physical equipment itself, that confer the graces and merits of the Rosary.
