He was likly widowed by the time Jesus made him head of the Church on earth. This is not a defined teaching of the church but a speculation held in commen by many theologians. I forget the reasons for this speculation but it has to do with the mention of his mother-in-law and other stuff too.
The how did he take his wife with him on his travels?
Do we not have the right to take along a Christian wife, as do the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? 1 Cor 9:5
Note that the “rest of the apostles” had wives also, although tradition says some were single, I think.

Because following the advice and example of St. Paul and example of Christ the Church has created a Law prohibiting a man who has received Holy Orders from entering into a valid Marriage.
St. Paul said it was also his right if he choosed to marry. But choose not to so, this is written in the New Testament. ST. Peter was married and Jesus choose him hello!!! Aaron was married and Moses gave the laws if a priest choose to get married. Married only once etc.!!! the Catholic Church created a man made law for priest not to marry!!!

The church has their reason for doing so and God knows the truth of their intentions.

God Bless

Please where does all this speculations come from. Likely a widow please!!! There is nothing wrong I believe if a priest is married and has children! Do you think they were worried about the support of the priest and their families??? OUR HEAVENLY FATHER HAS A SON??? HELLO "this is my son “in” whom I am pleased!!!

So, are you implying that Peter didn’t want to follow Christ?
I’m saying no such thing. I don’t know what your line of thought is and how it reached that conclusion, but it is in error.

I’m saying priests are more imitating Christ than Peter. What you’re implying is that priests imitate Peter and maybe Christ as an afterthought. Christ has always been the center of the priesthood and the Catholic Church.

Why priests cannot get married now…

The Latin Rite requires (there are a VERY few exceptions, but I’m not going into them here) that priests be celibate, and has for many years- the Magisterium has not seen any serious need to lift that requirement.

1.) Latin Rite Priests- especially nowadays- do not have time for a wife and children. A priest pours himself out, offering himself as a sacrifice to God and the Church. It has been said that the family is a microcosm of the Church- so a husband/father does for his family what priests do for the Church. I imagine it would be hard to do both- to totally offer yourself as a sacrifice for your family AND for the Church?

2.) Our culture teaches us that we must be in a relationship at all times to be happy. The celibate priesthood is an example to the world that a person can devote their time in the service of something greater than themselves (the Church)- though still having an appreciation for the married state. It is ridiculous how so many people just can’t function without their significant other. They don’t want to go anywhere or do anything if the other person can’t or doesn’t want to go- they are too needy. Celibacy is a gift to the Church and to the world. All of the good priests I know- and even some of the not-so-good ones- think that celibacy is a good thing- that they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hello

That is there God given right if they choose to do so, not marry!! It is not forced upon them. But I am sure there are many men who make beautiful priests who are married!! God’s command go forth and be fruitful and cultivate the earth. Thanks

So you are saying your Eastern Rite Priests don’t?

One thing on this topic: often Latin rite cite statistics and studies on Protestant ministers on how difficult it is to have a family, how many leave the ministry etc. The Latin church teaches that these minister don’t have the grace of the priesthood, but that their Eastern Rite priests do. Why not talk about the real live experience of your own priests?

This orthodox, and Orthodox.

If you (edited) took the time to read some of the other posts of this thread, you’d see that we know full well that mandatory celibacy is a law of the Church and not strictly necessary. St. Paul recommended celibacy, he did not require it, but the Church does. We know that. That’s not the question at hand. Please do not hijack threads. If you want to debate priestly celibacy, start a new thread.

The original poster asked for specific reasons why the Church mandates celibacy when it has not always done so.

Not said so in the Holy Scriptures St. Peter was married, it was there free will if they choose to. ST. Paul speaks of this also and Moses gave the law what was required of Priest if they choose to married.

Thanks
Priests were never ordained after marriage. Hence, he is technically correct.

You have it backwards. Priests are ordained after marriage. It happens right now all the time in Eastern Catholic Churches. There are many thousands, all recognized by Rome. They are not allowed to marry after ordination. Married converts from Protestantism who were ministers are ordained in the Roman rite today.

I mixed my words… sorry 🤷

eastern rite priests are generally members of smaller parishes, isa. it’s not quite the same thing.

Here, or in the East.

And since I’ve never seen the issue of parish size brought up in this context, what point are you making about it?

There are Latin Rite priests who are married who came from Lutheran and Anglican tradition. I hardly think these communities are small parishes… One of the Chaplain here is a married Latin Rite priests. The congregation is rather large.

Someone in a class I was teaching on Old Testament Scripture asked me why priests cannot get married now. I didn’t know exactly how to answer that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I’d say it is because celibate priests are better able to “consecrate themselves with undivided heart to the Lord and to “the affairs of the Lord” [1 Cor 7:32], they give themselves entirely to God and to men. Celibacy is a sign of this new life to the service of which the Church’s minister is consecrated; accepted with a joyous heart celibacy radiantly proclaims the Reign of God.” (CCC 1579).

See also Paul VI’s Presbyterorum Ordinis, especially par. 16.

I won’t argue what ever! They were married when Jesus chose them period! Are you saying Jesus broken up their marriage all of them? So Jesus must be going against the will of his Father what ever.

Priests cannot get married now, and there has never been a time when priests could get married.
Wow. St. Peter was married. The Apostles were married. The first Popes were married. Eastern rite priests can be married. Converted Lutherans and Episcopalians priests who became Catholic priests are often married. We had a married clergy till the year 1000.

Some of the Popes who were married:
St. Peter, Apostle
St. Felix III 483-492 (2 children)
St. Hormidas 514-523 (1 son)
St. Silverus (Antonia) 536-537
Hadrian II 867-872 (1 daughter)
Clement IV 1265-1268 (2 daughters)
Felix V 1439-1449 (1 son)
