Why purify the sacred vessels?

The General Instructions of the Roman Missal n.279 reserved the purification of the sacred vessels to the priest, deacon or instituted acolyte. If this is so important, there must be some liturgical significance to this rite. What is it? And what are they purified from? or for?
 
My friend,

The sacred vessels are called sacred for a reason. They have held the precious body and blood of Our Blessed Lord. Any amount of the sacred species that might remain in the vessels must be consumed with reverence and the first water that is poured into them must also be consumed to make sure that no amount of His precious body and blood should be poured out. This is the duty and honor of the priest or deacon–as a sign of how sacred we believe the Eucharist to be.
