Why read at Mass?

I’m thankful that the new Canadian Lectionary has done away with the congregational responses. It allows us to concentrate on what’s being read rather than on our next cue to jump in.

I think that being morally required to shout “Crucify him!” and mock Jesus aloud really has a powerful effect on the lost, the lukewarm, and the fervently faithful alike. All kinds of different effects, but never a weak effect.
