Hi,
The sanctuary lamp gives evidence that the Blessed Sacrament is reserved nearby. If the Blessed Sacrament is removed for some reason, then the lamp is extinguished. Most sanctuary lamps rest in a red glass or plastic container. But the Church does not stipulate that the lamp must be of a certain color. Some places have a clear container or a white one.
