Larry Norman had a song back in the early 70’s titled “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?” The Christian music industry responded by producing two decades of **** (not that secular pop music is any better). Lately there appear to be signs of change… P.O.D. is rockin’ the party now and churches are letting the teens have their “youth” services with a little electric guitar and hand-clapping. However, I am 24 years old and somehow feel like I would stick out at a Life Teen Mass. Being over six feet tall wouldn’t help. However, I’ve been attending this Baptist church in Louisville called Sojourn for about two years that’s mosty attended by people college-aged and in their 20’s or 30’s. The music is genuine and genuinely good (I truly enjoy the two albums this church has made as much as any secular rock music). But we don’t play this style of music with the intention to snagging young people like some kind of ploy to trick the heathens into loving Jesus (haha! got 'em!). It’s just what we like and how we want to express our worship to God.

I guess I got to thinking when I was driving past my cousin’s church and read the sign: “LIFE TEEN MASS 7:30PM.” I thought, “Well, that must be the ‘fun’ Mass.” It reminds me of eating at the kids’ table at family reunions. Like you can have your fun music now, but once you graduate high school, it’s time to grow up and go to the big peoples’ Mass. I’m not suggesting Mass should be totally changed, but if they can reserve a Mass for the teens, why not designate a Mass for the Deadheads? You know, it’s the whole “meet people where they’re at” thing that Jesus started.

Anyway, I just felt like making my opinion heard… that’s two cents from a Lutheran Who Likes Some Things About the Baptist Churches, But Won’t Go There Because They Won’t Recognize His Infant Baptism (Among Other Theological Reasons) And Therefore Will Really Ruffle Their Feathers When He Becomes Catholic.

Jason

P.S. Actually, I don’t want to spread any hate for the Baptists… they are my friends after all and most of them aren’t plotting to kill the Pope.

Jason,

I would encourage you to attend LifeTeen. If you like to work with youth, or even if you don’t its worth it.
LifeTeen changed my life, and saved my life.
As an older young person you presance can have an impact. And feel absolutly to PM me if you want to know how LifeTeen changed my life. Why it made me an incredibly stong person and why I am slogging though finals just to get back…and why im grateful because if it wasn’t for finals then I wouldn’t be a college…

Sincerly

If I find one around Louisville, I’ll check that out sometime… or just go to my cousin’s church. It’s an hour away, but I visit him quite a bit. But I certainly don’t mean to diss the Life Teen Mass… I just don’t like the label “Teen.” How about the Face Melting Rock Mass? Seeing what God is doing through this Baptist church I’m attending right now, I just think it would be an awesome way to attract those “fallen away” Catholics and it would just be cool to combine the ancient liturgy with modern styles of music. Singin’ the Great Amen to some Zeppelin-style electric guitar reverborating throughout the cathedral… (bowing to God, of course… not the guitar player 🙂 )

The reson its not called “rock church” is because it isn’t a Rock Mass. Its a Mass celebrated with probably more reverance than normal because we take time to sing long songs insted of 1 minute verses of some song our ancestors sang. Even the newest teens are expected to show great reverance. And usually the best song, the one we really get excited to, is saved for last…

If you are really intrested in find a church go to the lifeteen homepage and use the locator.

Don’t go to Baptist churches when you can find it in your own religion.

Is the purpose of the Mass to be an entertaining good time sing along ?

Why not make Mass entertaining? Obviously the purpose of Mass is to worship, hear God’s Word, and receive the Eucharist, but shouldn’t we be excited about it? Song has always been an important element of worship in Christianity and Judaism. We need to incorporate modern music into our churches. Every church doesn’t need a rock band, but worship should be adapted to the community the church inhabits. You know, many of our hymns were originally Irish drinking songs :clapping:

lifeteen.com says there are no Life Teen Masses in Louisville. I’m not surprised actually… from the former Catholics I’ve met through my Baptist church, the Catholic Church here is about as alive as Lazarus on the third day. (ba-doom ching! ha ha) Well, there are a few parishes that are exceptions… two or three perhaps.

I’m certain our mega-church, Southeast Christian, has grown largely due to Catholics leaving their churches. It’s probably close to 20,000 members by now, but I think their services are also pretty boring. Too many bright lights and happy people for me… feels like Barney should be leading us in “Jesus Loves You!”

Anyway, I’m rambling. I’m actually planning to check out this Catholic church downtown. I actually enjoy traditional Mass, but it’s not for everybody. So I’m glad a lot of churches are doing the Life Teen Mass… I just don’t like that label. Grown-ups can like modern music too :dancing:
