Why should we have to confess to a priest?

According to what Jesus said we should only believe in him and get baptized in order to be saved. I know he gave Peter and the apostles the ability to forgive sins, but he never said confessing to them was required to be saved.

I would assume if that were the case Jesus and the apostles would have made that very clear; other that a brief mention of it in the bible.
