By what authority, do you derive your power to try to influence others here, on religion, or the issues of faith and morals?

There seems to be many here, who are eager to give advice and try to define Christianity and I am wondering; by what authority do you do this?

Which authority, allows you to tell me and/or others here, what we should believe?

Why should we listen to you?

Backatcha!

It’s an internet message board, Jim. It’s not a technical clearing house for experts in their field.

I mean, we hear all manner of goofy stuff from you and no one questions your right to say it.

Also, especially in the threads you start, I NEVER see a non-Catholic telling you what you should believe. Usually a baited trap is laid for them by you so you can spring some kind of canned apologetic response, but it certainly isn’t ever a case where you are being told what to believe. Rather, non-Catholics are asked why they believe or disbelieve this or that idea and they answer to the best of their ability, which varies.

Sheesh.

Sounds very dictatorial. I think of CAF as a place where we can share our knowledge about our faith and what we have learned about life.

I am student of life and of theology and have found out some great stuff in the course of my study. I hope some of it would be worth listening to!

I have posed the OP’s question to several non-Catholics who told me that certain Catholic beliefs are counter to Scripture or counter to Christ’s teachings. Once these accusations are refuted (a claim that any Catholic belief is counter to Scripture always can be), I have found the exact opposite of what you are saying; my experience is that many non-Catholics simply use this message board to tell Catholics that they are right and the Catholics are wrong. Again, in my experience, there is a good percentage of non-Catholic Christians that are simply not open to discussions with Catholics other than to spread their opinions. I won’t preclude that there aren’t Catholics like this also, but my experience simply has not been the same as yours.

When the discussion degenerates to this level of “talking past each other”, the question the Catholic should always answer these allegations with is: “why, because you said so?” Likewise, this is a good question for the non-Catholic Christian to ask when Catholics assert their faith. I believe in following the authority of Christ, which is why I’m Catholic. If anyone can ever convince me that their church and not mine posesses this authority, then I will join their church because I want the truth. If they cannot convince me of this, why should I leave the truth for someone’s opinion?

Jimmy B is right on. There are 33,000+ non-Catholic Christian faiths out there because non-Catholic Christians can pretty much act on their own authority. That’s why I always suggest, when non-Catholic Christians have issues with Catholic teachings, to try and disprove apostolic authority instead of Marian doctrine, purgatory, etc. That’s really what it’s all about, everyone ought to want the church that teaches with Christ’s authority. People can say whatever they want on a message board, the real trick is backing it up.

We dont ask you to listen to us we ask that you use your head. Read the bible without any preconceptions and you will be lead to truth.

Jimmy,
I have no authority at all and I am not qualified to teach anybody about moral issues. As a matter of fact, I’m just as unqualified as the apostles were when they were chosen by Christ to one day build His Church.

All of the authority in anything I say comes from the one Church founded by Christ over 2000 years ago. Therefore, I always try to cite authentic Church references whenever possible.

God Bless,
Gary

That’s good advice; the problem comes when the Catholic’s truth doesn’t line up with the non-Catholic’s truth; when they read the same Scripture passage and come away with different intterpretations. That’s the whole point of the initial question.

That’s the only way to be sure one is right… 👍

Of course though if we don’t come to the same “truth” as you then we read it with preconceptions right?

It is a novel idea, the problem arises when people who tell me they went to the Bible without “preconceptions” and have been “led to truth” but are Baptist, Lutheran, Non-denominational… so on and so forth. 🤷

God bless

Because others use scripture and history as well to make their claims? No different than the RCC.

Seems that hasn’t worked out so well for you.

By the authority of Holy Mother Church, as I have the grace to understand her teachings.

Christ commanded His believers to preach to all nations. He didn’t say, only those of you with multiple ecclesiastical degrees should go out and preach. He said this to everyone who believed in Him. And at that time He said this, **those who believed in Him WERE CATHOLIC!!! **😃

So - to answer your question… By the grace and authority of Jesus Christ, and the ONLY Church He EVER established, we Catholics seek to fulfill His directive.

If you don’t like what we have to say, then well, sorry about that. Often times the Truth is indeed difficult for some to accept.

I blither. You, and others, can listen or not.

If you find what I have to say interesting, then you might continue listening. If you don’t, then you you probably won’t.

If you don’t like what I have to say, you can talk with me about it, or you can ignore me. Make your choice. 🙂

The Church. (Is this a “D’Uh!?” moment, or what?)
Why should we listen to you?
Because you find me interesting.

Otherwise don’t listen to me.

Do you somehow presume that by talking we are somehow being coercive, that we’re FORCING our demands that others do as we say on them?

How can I force anything with a bunch of pixels arranged into letters?

Agreed! Catholic- not Roman Catholic.

The early church fathers’ beliefs are much more in line with the Roman Catholic Church than any other denomination.
If true (I haven’t extensively read their work), that has no bearing on me. They were human, just like us. People can hold whatever opinions they fancy

This is irrelevant, and totally off topic. The first Christians were ONLY CATHOLIC. There were no different rites among the Apostles. Stop making an argument where none needs to be.
