Why should we pray?

This is something I’m honestly trying to sort through. Why pray when God is going to do what He wants anyway?

We pray to have the saints and archangels (who are patrons of various things) translate our feelings in a holy manner in order to aid us but also for our entire species.

We experience the effects of Satan in the world and there is a solution to fighting back, to pray!

You pray to develop a relationship with God, a friendship. It is for your own good. He will give you what you ask for in prayer, anything you ask for, as He told you. But if you ask for sinful things then because He loves you He will give you other things. Think of it this way, you have a toddler who asks for bread, bread is ok and food so yes you will probably give him/her bread to eat… but if it is 2mins before dinner you will not give it to him/her because you have something better for them. They will likely not understand and throw a tantrum. We are like that. But by prayer, we learn to align ourselves to the will of God and accept if something is not given that He knows best and we wait patiently for His will to be revealed. The more we align ourselves to His will (which can only be done through prayer - otherwise how can we know our friends wishes?) the more we get what we ask for, not because we are great but because we ask for what is good for us ie what God will is for us.

I could ask you the same question! Why pray when you’re going to do what you want anyway? lol

Prayer can be a heart to heart companionship.
Our friendships wouldn’t last very long if all we asked of them was for favors and we ignored them the rest of the time. You know you wouldn’t like to be treated like that either.

Because of the grace of Jesus Christ, we can become a source of blessing to the people around us. We can be a force for good! How much do you want to be ‘in the game’? The saints found that in their daily struggle, they could connect with the sufferings of Christ and ask for graces for others. Are you waiting in line somewhere? Say hi to God and offer that time for graces for others, especially if you are feeling impatient. If you find someone annoying, recognize that you are struggling with that person and ask God to help you be more kind, more loving, and ask for that person to. Get more plugged in, and things will begin to change.

Then when you are at Mass on Sunday, bring all those struggles with you and put them on the altar with Christ’s offering. Tell God again that this world needs his help, and you need his help. You’ll see things change.

Cajunjoy thanks for the father mike videos! Can we pray in a state of mortal sin? YES WE CAN!

I’ve been waiting a long time for someone to say that, it’s so righteous!!

🤣 oh me too, when my daughter dug into me with words I repeated what I was told in the Army “is that all good you’ve got? I’ve had better!”

Best reply to mean-ness ever lol

We may not get what we request but in praying we grow spiritually. Like St Teresa of Avila said, it is the beginning of every virtue.

Asking for stuff is only one form of prayer.

We pray because we are in relationship with our God, and you can’t have relationship without communication.
He speaks to us through Scripture, along with Tradition.

There are four kinds of prayer: Petition (“Dear God, I need something from you…”), Adoration (“Dear God, you’re wonderful…”), Contrition (“Dear God, I’m sorry…”), and Thanksgiving (“Dear God, thanks for everything.”).

If someone’s prayers are 100% petitions… yeah, they might want to broaden their horizons a bit. 😛

Just to be clear, not all of my prayers are asking for things.

Yes! I just wanted to emphasize this.

If I could also recommend a book to anyone interested, I’d recommend “God and You: Prayer as Personal Relationship” by William Barry, S.J.

Prayer gets me through my days. It revitalizes me, soothes my anxieties, and reminds me of God’s everlasting love.
For me, The Holy Rosary has worked better than any doctor or drug in calming my worries and guiding my decisions.

Prayer is conversation, and I’m sure God likes it when we take time to talk to Him. We can ask for our intentions, especially for others. We can thank Him for his love, forgiveness, creation, for Christ’s sacrifice - for all that we have. I know I like it when people take time to thank me. Just think of it as relationship building. Some enjoy writing out their prayers.

Endorse our trust in Jesus, Almighty God or Holy Mother Mary to rescue us from the devil time. Satan is afraid of that.

From personal experience I’ve found that prayer is surrender of the human will to His power, wisdom and goodness. It is bonding between the Father and His children. It keeps our consciences tender and our hearts edified. It is that food and drink that Christ’s disciples knew not of. It is the anchor of our souls.

And when we fail to pray adequately, the Spirit comes to our aid and bears us in our weaknesses. Prayer is a foolproof highway.
