Why so many divisions in the body of Christ?

John 17:17-23 I pray that they may be ONE as we are ONE.

There is only ONE BODY of Christ, so there can be only ONE truth. If you divide the Body of CHrist into many folds you get different truths.

Hi:
I started a thread a while back where I addressed these issues. I don’t like repeating myself. It would take a long time with quite a few words to address the issues you raise.

But to simplify it a whole lot, the issue in my mind is whether the church can exist at a point in time in a state which is contrary to how Jesus designed the church. I see no reason why it can not, particularly since we are not yet at the end of the age and do not know what God may do in the future to answer the prayer of Jesus Christ in John 17.;

But I don’t like repeating myself.

I would say no. Because simply Jesus promised us that. Because Jesus promised us the Advocate the Holy Spirt to lead us into one Truth. Jesus promised us that he would be with the Church until the end of time, and the Chuch would never fall. So that would be proof that the Church COULD not only exist through time WOULD exist through time.

I can only speak for the Catholic faith, we believe in the universal nature of baptism. If a person gets re-baptized, they just getting all wet for no particular reason.

Why and how can you judge which of His commandments I do not obey? We may not always agree on what it means to love God and how to show our love. But I love God.

I can speak for both from what I know and yup just one more thing that unites Catholics and many non Catholics. Peace to you as well.

I posted that in a hurry let me rephrase that, you must obey His commandments, all of them. If anyone did that we would all agree on what is the truth He taught and we would all be united in One Faith.

Thats was the point I was trying to make, to many Christians refuse to acknowledge all of Christ’s commandants and to obey them, instead they try and reduce Christianity down to commonalities such as a stated love of God in an attempt to have unity despite disagreements, but God revealed all He did for a purpose and it is not ours to throw out, it is ours to accept and believe in its entirety.

The Apostle Paul opposed Peter because of the truth of the gospel. Are you saying that the successors of Peter are full of grace and truth like Jesus?

What is you understanding of the church? I believe there is only one body of Christ.

Do you believe Christians are able to obey all of the commandments of Jesus all the time?
 
I would say - divitions in the visable body of Christ - the Church Militant.

My answer is because we are fallen; because we see through a glass darkley. We are limited in space and time, and so we don’t see the whole Church, and how it fits together. We cannot always see where we as individuals, or as groups, have strayed. We can’t know every bit of history; reason is imperfect; we can’t see the future.

Essentially, for the same reasons we as individuals are divided, and imperfect in our understanding and in our unity.

I would say such divisions are inevitable and to be expected in the visible Church in a fallen world. Luckily, we know they will be healed by Christ, and that his Body is indeed one, even if we fail to see how.

I have to agree with this conclusion which should humble each one of us. It’s sad that we tend to boast in our particular tradition instead of boasting in God.

And that is exactly what causes the division. Those who are not in union with the successor of Peter cause division. When Jesus’ prophesied that Satan wanted to test the Apostles (plural), He turned to Peter and said to him (singular) But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail". Therefore, all those who want to be included in Jesus’ prayer better get in unity with Peter!

No, not all Christians are steeped in sin and pride, One (2nd). There are many faithful persons who have received the Apostolic Teachings and are obedient to them as a whole, one faith.

I suppose this would be true. However, the declaration of infallibility does not apply to any one person (“himself”). It is a gift for the Church, exercised by the one God appointed to feed and care for the sheep.

It is Christ who made the declaration that the HS would lead the Church into “all Truth”. This did not come from any human.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

“If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” (Mark 3:25)

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)

Take away all enmity and prejudice, and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that as there is but one Body and one Spirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may henceforth be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
