Why so much hatred by Non-Catholic "Christians"?

Silly me went searching around the web & came across a non-Cathlic forum. Why I did this I do not know. Just curious I guess.

Anyway I have never seen so much hate towards the Church in my life! There was a thread about the comments made by Bill Maher about Pope Benedict & there were “Christians” there agreeing with him.

There’s so many threads about Catholicism, & all the lies, hate & just plain ignorance was astounding. I literally felt like I was punched in the stomach just reading this stuff. I would never in my wildest dreams ever tell someone they’re the devil’s spawn as I saw someone say there.

Could someone please explain to me why? Is it just ignorance?

Anyway Thank God for CAF. I know there are heated debates whatnot here, but never the pure hate that I saw there between so-called “Christians”

Ignorance, personal bias, personal axes to grind due to a bad Catholic upbringing; any number of things.

Quite the same as any number of times that Protestant beliefs are misrepresented here, are called heretics; any number of chafe that has to be sifted from the wheat to have a decent discussion on a forum.
 
It is a mixture of ignorance and fear, which ultimately keeps many from actually seeking the truth. It is easier to stay in the little box you grew up in, or originally came to Christ in without looking further to make sure what you “know” to be true, is actually true. I’ve been to several sites like you are talking about and it’s like a Jack Chick tract. There is usually an ounce of truth in each argument, but a barrell of BS.
 
Triuneunity,Any denomination that came up with the Davey and Goliath series can’t be all bad.😃

This is an interesting and important question. I’m Protestant and participate on a Protestant board and Catholic bashing there is rampant so much so, that I’ve started fellowshiping here with more frequency recently. Its a problem. While we are all human (and even on this Board I’ve noticed things flare up), there does seem to be a palable difference, generally, in the approach of believing Catholic’s exercise of charity towards Protestants which is often not reciprocated. Its my hope and prayer that the division will be closed and this rift will be healed.

Here’s the deal:

The pope is the big dog on the porch.

The office and whoever occupies it will always be the focal point of hatred from Christians and non-Christians alike. Even some Catholics are always dissatisfied.

You may quote me if you wish.
 
Bishop Fulton Sheen said it best over 40yrs ago."In America you will not find a hundred people who hate the Catholic Church,but you will find millions who hate what they think the Catholic Church is.I grew up Omaha,Ne.There are a lot of Catholics in Nebraska.I now live in Harlan County Ky.Maybe 2% Catholic.A lot of these people have been taught that we believe all kinds of things that we do not believe and /or do.I also think some of blame lies at our own doorstep.🙂
 
One notes that many protestants are former Catholics. I suspect they feel obliged to justify their abandonment of the Catholic Faith. Frequently their reasons for leaving the Catholic Church are not very defensible, e.g. divorce and remarriage; so they need to develop acceptable ones.

In RCIA, I try to emphasize that one is not abandoning ones former beliefs but adding to them. Those coming to us bring some very strong and valid beliefs with them that strengthen us and should not be disparaged.
 
This is not something new. Jesus experienced this type of negative reponse from his fellow Jews also. The question Why ?deserves an anwer. The only answer I can think of is TRUTH. Truth of the Catholic church exposes the deceptions of all those who come against her, Just like Jesus did, when he was confronted by the leaders of the Jewish faith. Jesus has never left his church, and Jesus continues to have his body persecuted by the different Saul’s out there, be it non catholic christians, Protestants or non christians.

TRUTH does not contradict itself, it is…When those who pit themsleves against this rock of Truth in the Catholilc church, resort to attacks, because they cant run from the Truth, The result of all they can do… is decieve others into believing their contradicting views of the 2000 year old Christian Catholic church, of which they generally do not have a true knowledge and understanding of the teachings of the Catholic church, only what they have been taught to keep away from her, and attack her doctrines. Thinking they are doing all this for God, a sort of zealot if you will, for their misinformed teachings.

Everytime I see that on TV, I am reminded of just how dated I really am hahaha
 
There is a lot of pure ignorance out there but there is also the belief that Catholics are corrupting the Bible and leading others straight to hell. Some protestants actually believe the Catholic church is the Great Whore of Babylon written about in Revelation. That is what some of their pastors and Bible commentaries tell them and if they don’t find the time to study on their own, they never learn the truth.

I’m in the same situation. I grew up in Brooklyn. My neighborhood was predominately Italian/Irish Catholics. But there were Jewish families scattered in there too. And I’m sure people of other beliefs I didn’t know of.

I can remember as a kid my Granny telling me about other faiths/beliefs but there never was anything negative. I used to go down the block & help this Jewish mom with her young son. I was maybe 9-10 at the time. I learned a lot from her about the Jewish faith. There was never any animosity. I just learned there are those that believe differently than me, but to treat everyone as I’d like to be treated. Simple.

Now that I live in OK Catholics are the minority. I believe we’re about 7% out of all Christians here. I personally have not been in any debates with anyone here. But since I’ve reverted back last year, DH would talk about it with his friends (all Non Catholics btw ) & boy they had some wacky thoughts on the Church.
The good thing though is that DH (non-Catholic too btw) was able to tell these people the truth. I guess I’m training him properly huh? 😉

Haha…in addition to Davey and Goliath, we have Brooklyn in common. Woot.
 
A lot of it has to do with upbringing; some extreme Protestant sects teach that the CC is the ‘whore of Babylon’ led by the Anti-Christ, based on a dubious interpretation of the book of Revelation. In other cases, a lot of the people who have vindictive hatred towards the church are ex-Catholics who are angry or upset towards their former church for whatever reason. In any case, anger and hatred poison ecunemical relations and make building a better world through mutual goodwill much harder. As Kung said, ‘No world peace without peace between religions.’ I would add: No world or community peace without peace within religions.
 
Being a former protestant, I used to believe all the anti-catholic stuff that I read and heard. One day I started to read what catholics’ actually believed and as a result I became CATHOLIC!!!👍

Is there a particular denom that preaches anti-Catholicism more than others? I’m just curious.

There were a lot of former Catholics on that forum too. Majority of them said that they finally read the bible for themselves & concluded that the Church was wrong. 🤷 & that’s why they left.

:clapping: Can I ask were you raised to believe the anti-Catholicism?
I’m asking b/c my MIL (who’s 77) raised Baptist, had the same assumptions of Catholics that a lot of Protestants have. But she did say that she didn’t know where the ideas came from.

She said she just remembers when she was a kid, her younger sister was doing something that could get them into trouble & she told her sister that if she didn’t stop they were going to put her in a Catholic church. The sister stopped immediately she was so fearful. :eek: 🤷
