Why so much hatred by Non-Catholic "Christians"?

Brooklyn NY? Where at? I’m from Flatlands. I miss it terribly & I’ve been gone from there for 26 years. Pathetic huh?
Bay Ridge. I’ve been in exile in Ohio now for six years since I was married. 😦

Is there a particular denom that preaches anti-Catholicism more than others? I’m just curious.

There were a lot of former Catholics on that forum too. Majority of them said that they finally read the bible for themselves & concluded that the Church was wrong. 🤷 & that’s why they left.
It seems to largely be independent Baptist and fundamentalist churches that focus actively on teaching against Roman Catholicism. You’ll also find it in some Reformed churches as well, but not nearly as much.

In my own Lutheran tradition there are small sections that may be anti-Catholic, but it is an exception to the norm (I myself have never witnessed it).

Because non-Catholics are told that they are not Catholic because of their own desires. That they are going to hell because their non-Catholic. Non-Catholics are told that their religion is a lie. If you tell Catholics why you don’t believe what they believe then it becomes an issue of Anti-Catholic.

Seventh-Day Adventists do a lot. One of their main evangelistic tools is their “Last Days” seminars, in which the Catholic Church is referred to as the whore of Babylon. The pope as antiChrist, etc.

I know, cause I attended that seminar to get a free Bible.

DH is from Midwood.

Davey & Goliath. 👍

You’ll be homesick for Brooklyn for the duration. Back in his youth, they didn’t tell you what neigborhood they were from (Sheepshead Bay, Park Slope, Bay Ridge), they said they were from St. Augustine’s, St. Patrick’s, St. Rose . . .

JWs. Some of the big radio evangelists have web sites with a one-layer click to the “false religon” of the Catholic Church. Then, of course there are the out and out lunatics whose profession is “evangelizing” Catholics.

WELS! Yow!

Up until recently the Westminster Confession officially referred to the Pope as the AntiChrist.

One notes that many protestants are former Catholics. I suspect they feel obliged to justify their abandonment of the Catholic Faith. Frequently their reasons for leaving the Catholic Church are not very defensible, e.g. divorce and remarriage; so they need to develop acceptable ones.

.
thanks for bringing that up. I have found that ex-Catholics are “the worst” in attacking the Church and that it is true there is usually some personal kind of r eason…

I used to get so upset talking to them… then i realized they are either ignorant and/or obstinate…(or worldy or whatever)… these days, i just try to remember that they could be on their way to Hell for rejecting truth… (the true Christ) and so, i pity them… and pray for them.

One can always remember: There, but for the grace of God, go I.

I think that Catholics know more about Jesus’ love for us… Protestants don’t have His love to the same degree or intensity… as Catholics do. I am sorry if that upsets anyone, but I am just being honest.
Of course, i have known Catholics who weren’t very loving either but… even so - i have never heard a Catholic call a Protestant the names they call us or refer to a leader in their church as anti-Christ or their church as the Whore of Babylon.

:clapping: Can I ask were you raised to believe the anti-Catholicism?
I’m asking b/c my MIL (who’s 77) raised Baptist, had the same assumptions of Catholics that a lot of Protestants have. But she did say that she didn’t know where the ideas came from.

She said she just remembers when she was a kid, her younger sister was doing something that could get them into trouble & she told her sister that if she didn’t stop they were going to put her in a Catholic church. The sister stopped immediately she was so fearful. 🤷
I was not raised with anti-catholicism, I kind of ran into to it, when I became a christian.:o

I think the sword cuts both ways. IOW, there are people who seem to believe that God hates certain people and therefore think it’s okay of they hate them too. This is nonsense as God doesn’t “hate” anybody and neither should we. Intense dislike is one thing, hatred is another. People who “hate” will find any excuse and some use religion, some use race, some use nationality, etc. This type of person has a superiority complex - they feel they are better than “others”. I think we should stop suggesting that large groups of people (in this case, non-Catholic Christians) all “hate” anybody, Catholic or otherwise. It is insulting and decidedly unChristian, IMO.

Ah let’'s see I went to Bishop Kearney HS-Bay Ridge right? Then I went to Midwood HS for a semester before I got shipped out here.

I could’ve said I was from St. Thomas Aquinas, but then there’s 2 in Bklyn-the other being in Park Slope? 😉

What??? This is not what the Church teaches. If you go to people & these are the responses you’re getting maybe you should go straight to the source & read up on it yourself.
We are seperated bretheran, & we have the fullness of the truth.

Now your statement about desires, what does that entail? ABC, abortion, moral issues? If that’s so, then that’s man desires & not God’s.

Well at least for me Anti-Catholics are people that spew their hate with misconceptions about what they **think **the Church is.
You won’t see a priest giving his homily on why the Protestants are going to hell, why the Baptist church is the whore of Babylon, or that Billy Graham is the anti-christ. How ridiculous is that?

And if what you say is true please give me links to Catholic websites where their main objective is to spread lies about Non-Catholic Churches.

Peace be with you.

I got a the info here. imagine that. It is a post called thank you.

I am not sure that the WELS is more or less anti-Catholic than the LCMS. One must always split the views on these issues. It is one thing to reject a teaching of the Catholic Church, say, the view of justification. It is another to actually be anti-Catholic. To me, being anti-Catholic is a systematic approach toward converting them, attacking them personally, obsessing over everything the Catholic church teaches as false, etc. I haven’t experienced this in WELS or LCMS churches…not that it isn’t there, but it’s pretty small in comparison to some other denominations.

I think you’re right, and in any event, I have never encountered ANY stripe of Lutheran wher blind-stupid ignorance was the ruling factor. Lutherans are usually well enough educated to have read a little real history.

My experience is that JW, SDA, and Independent Baptists are the worst with the Anti-Catholicism deal…in that order. My former boss is a US Army Southern Baptist Chaplain. His mother is Catholic, he was raised in several churches but never batized Catholic. He is the antithesis of what you’d expect of a SB pastor…drinks (LOVES german beer) cusses (he’s working on that…and by no means anti Catholic.

I’ve seen some pretty unfriendly comments about Protestants made on this board.

RE: Brooklyn, I’m not a native, but I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Williamsburg by Marcy Ave and Broadway…I love that area…Jewish and/or Puerto Rican.

Ah, but those military Chaplains are REALLY great guys. All of 'em. The head chaplain where I work is one of my best buddies here – Orthodox Jew, Lieutennant Commander USH Retired – Navy Chaplain for 20 years. GREAT guy.
