Why such veneration of the cross?

Is it not idolatory going down on your knees and kissing a cross?
 
Hi,

Kneeling down to kiss the cross would be idolatry if one were worshiping it. But Catholics show such reverence to the cross only because Jesus died on one and we do worship Him.
