I was just wondering why the church has ecumenism with other faiths? What does it aim to gain?

I’d guess that it is to inform others about what Catholics actually believe and not false assumptions. That way (maybe) more people will come to the Church.

That’s a good point, thanks!
What about all this talk that the popes have prayed with Muslims or Hindus?

have any Links? Muslims I can see how it could be possible (although I wouldn’t recommend doing it as a lay person), since essentially we worship the same God. but Hindus? :eek: I’d need a link for that.

Aitey, I’ll find a link when I get the chance. I thnink I read it somewhere on CAF, so that one may or may not be true 🙂

You may be confusing ecumenism with interfaith dialog, which there is nothing wrong with either.

The goal of ecumenism is the restoration of unity among all Christians;

vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_decree_19641121_unitatis-redintegratio_en.html
  1. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Christ the Lord founded one Church and one Church only. However, many Christian communions present themselves to men as the true inheritors of Jesus Christ; all indeed profess to be followers of the Lord but differ in mind and go their different ways, as if Christ Himself were divided.(1) Such division openly contradicts the will of Christ, scandalizes the world, and damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature.

I would cast aside any fear that the Church wants to somehow unite Christianity with non-Christian religions. But interfaith dialogue helps us understand one another, which can only be good for the peaceful coexistence of peoples, and also [whisper]it could help pave the way for future evangelization.[/whisper]

Dialog with other faiths are good. First of all we find what we believe is the same. Mostly we find what do we have in common with our morals. Even though we may not believe the same about the trinity, many faiths are pro-life, pro-family and have better morals than half the so called Christians out there. Even between protestants and Catholics, if we dialog on we have in common, we stand a better chance of getting along and working together to feed the poor, help those in disasters etc.
