Why the divinity of Jesus is being taken literally when a lot of what in the Bible is not?

Thanks but maybe those people could give evidence for their belief that every title Christ went by in the NT, should be found in the OT. Is there a prophecy in the OT that says “the messiah better go by all of these titles or else He is not the messiah?”
Very true, but it’s fair to say that “Son of Man” (which was the crux of the question you were respond to) is far more than a title. It describes Jesus’ very nature as well as his origin on earth, two things that some would argue do not match up with what the Messiah was prophecised to be.
Is there a prophecy in the OT that states the messiah cannot reveal things about himself?
Also very true, as missing details or later-revealed details do not necessitate that an earlier description is incorrect. Although when those details are so amazing, so intrinsic to the nature of the thing being described, it can raise some suspicions when they are not noted earlier.

Let’s take an example. Say I have a friend who is telling me about this blind date he went on. Prior to the date a mutual friend told him the woman likes old movies and is great with kids. The friend then explains that when he met the woman she had supermodel looks and was a world-renowned heart surgeon. The missing details prior to meeting don’t automatically prove that my friend is lying/exaggerating, but it does make me question the veracity of his retelling.

If neither friends information contradicts with the other then on what grounds do you question your friend? Because he knows something you don’t or because he has something you don’t? Or both?

As I noted earlier, there are those who will note contradictions between the OT and NT narratives as it pertains to the promised Messiah and Jesus.

But let’s put that aside and say there are no contradictions. In my analogy the post-meeting part of the story is so fantastic that by its nature I would question my friend. Then on top of that if you compare with how ordinary the first part is, and doubts naturally creep in. He can go ahead and demonstrate how true is by letting me meet her. He may prove to be right and thus prove me wrong, but the disconnect between the two story parts would lead anyone to be a bit skeptical – and that’s a good thing.

You say doubt is reasonable because the post-meeting details given are so fantastic that they warrant suspicion. Yet you have not shown exactly why you consider these details to be fantastic in the first place. Are they fantastic because your mutual friend didn’t mention them to you? Do you not trust the friend that went on the date? Do you not believe a woman who loves old movies and who is great with kids is capable of having supermodel looks and being a world renowned heart surgeon? Is it that you do not believe such a woman would be single? Are any of these even justifiable based on logic and reason? In any case you have not really demonstrated why something fantastic must call a person to be skeptical.

Of course the other option would be to trust your friend’s post-meeting account because there is no real logical reason to doubt it especially when these details have confirmed that she does in fact love old movies and is great with kids. As far as logic is concerned, the fact that those two conditions have been met prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the women your mutual friend told you about and the one your friend went out on a date with are one and the same.

Jesus taught that we are all children of God and we must be perfect just as our Heavenly father is, this isn’t being taken literally.

What makes Jesus so unique to be worshiped as a god and not to be considered as only a wise and enlightened human being of his time?
In order not to hold to some form of Deity belief in any “god”; Atheist must actually deny their own existence.

What does God claim and WHY?

Rev. 1:8 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord God, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Rev. 22:13 “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

This dear friend is the ONLY logical and possible reason that you, me and the entire universe exist. There absolutely had to be a “First Cause” for everything. We choose to call it; “Our God.”

Exo. 3:6 “And he said: I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Moses hid his face: for he durst not look at God.” [3:14] “ And said to Moses: I AM WHO AM. He said: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: HE WHO IS, hath sent me to you“.

And this SAME God is Jesus Christ. Who but A God, could, or did have their birth and Death prophesied many hundreds of years before the historically provable event?

ABOUT 700 YEARS BEFORE IT TOOK PLACE: Isaiah 7:14: Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Matthew 1:22-23: All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’–which means, ‘God with us.’

ABOUT 800 YEARS BEFORE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST: Hosea 11:1: When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

Matthew 2:14-15 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'Out of Egypt I called my son.”

(Psalm 22:17-18 , 1000 years B.C.). But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities (Psalm 22:18, 1000 B.C). Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get

Mt. 27: 33-35 “And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.

Not coincidence, luck or happenstance; BUT God being in charge; God being always present is both the “cause” and the “effect” of the entire Universe and everything within it.

FOR EVERY “EFFECT” THERE MUST ABSOUTELY BE A “CAUSE.”

The Universe with its BILLIONS of stars, planets, galaxies, Complex-Order, and Natural Laws exit for a reason. It is simply self denial of logic to not acknowledge it. No other explanation is plausible, feasible, or provable. There MUST be a “First Cause” in order for it [everything] to exist.

That “Cause” was prophesied by the Prophet Isaiah, about 700 ** And the REASON for the Universe; and most especially, man himself is given and explained.

Isa.43 Verses 7 and 21: “every one who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." AND the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.” It’s mans Freewill choice. God makes it possible; some choose to make it impossible.

Humanity cannot logically deny the existence of a FORCE FAR GREATER than themselves; because they themselves in an inexplicitable manner, emulate that very Force; God Himself.

Of the Billions of things in the Universe; only one planet; PLANET EARTH can be PROVEN to have the ability to sustain life [unproven speculations are merely that: unproven!]. WHY? One in many BILLIONS are odds defying coincidence.

Then we get to humanity. It is a Scientific FACT that only one Life-Species; humanity alone has the ability to rationalize, love and or hate. In order for this to exist requires a mind, intellect, and a FREEWILL which are attached to the human Soul. For this discussion, defined as the animator of all life or “Life Force.”

The denial of God becomes evident when we point out that each of these attributes that enable man to be the top of the species chain; are like God Himself: SPIRITUAL THINGS. …. John 4:23-24 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him. God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth”…

The evidence of this TRUTH can be demonstrated and proven. 1. Only man has the ability to by utilizing all of the “spiritual; gifts” to freely choose to love or hate and to rationalize, to compute, and to create. 2. Take for example ones “FREEWILL.” It’s presence is easily provable [and yes I am aware that some deny it. They MUST in order to attempt rationalizing their position.] …. So quantify “freewill”. What is its size, shape, color and weight? Can’t be done; yet they exist.

It’s reasonable, logical, and I think scientific to state * that “LIKE” objects MUST originate from “Like” objects. An apple tree does not bear bananas.
Therefore these provable Spiritual attributes, MUST come from a Spiritual reality. We call it Our God. They are free to call it whatever they choose. BUT truth remains a single THING, per precise discussion point.

Many do take it literally; BUT it’s a work STILL IN PROGRESS!*

Now you need Old Testament references indicating the existence of Jesus as God?

First we can look in Genesis 19:24, where “YHWH rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah
brimstone and fire from YHWH out of heaven,” WAIT! I thought there was only ONE YHWH.
First sign that God is complex in his unity (In other words: Trinity).

In Wisdom 2:12-22, we find a prophetic passage which is SO clearly fulfilled by Jesus in the Gospel,
Wisdom describing “the righteous man” who “calls himself a child of the Lord” and says that “God
is his father.” This “righteous man” reproaches the religious authorities of “sins against the Law”
and accuses them of sins against their training. They plot to “test him with insult and torture”
and “condemn him to a shameful death,” not knowing the “the secret purposes of God.”

Another indicator that there are multiple persons in the One Being that is God is found in
Exodus 32:11-14 where God tells Moses that he will destroy the Israelites for their recent
sins of worshiping another god/idol, Moses pleads with God not to do that, leading to God
NOT destroying the Israelites. How is that significant? God CANNOT change his mind,
as seen in Malachi 3:6 where God says “…I am the Lord, I change not…”, revealing an in-
teraction of Divine Persons in the One Being of God.

That should be enough Old Testament, but let’s look now the the Book of Revelation:

Maybe you need something more Jesus-y, as some people say that “Jesus never claimed to
be God,” well in Revelation 1:8, 17 and 22:13, Jesus ACTUALLY SAYS that he is the Alpha
and the Omega
, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End, not as though a pro-
phet such as in Isaiah 44:6 - "Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer,
the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god," but Jesus
says “I AM”, not *“Thus says the Lord” *because HE IS THE LORD!
Thanks for these indications, is the word Emmanuel symbolic or literal refered to Jesus? Because many till now use “God is with us” as a divine support specially in wars…

I believe literal as Jesus is God and when became man “made his dwelling among us, and
we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14).

LibralAteoJesus:
Jesus taught that we are all children of God and we must be perfect just as our Heavenly father is, this isn’t being taken literally.
This isn’t taken literally because it is impossible. No one can be perfect; we are smart enough to realize this, and Jesus would have been too, so he couldn’t have meant it literally.
I would argue that it is literal; yet, you’re attempting to make it say something it isn’t trying to say. Let’s suppose I went up to you and said, “you need to be a good parent to your children, just as your wife is a good parent to your children!” Would I be speaking literally? Of course! Would that imply that you must be a good parent in exactly the same way that your wife is a good parent? Of course not! The role of a mother is different in certain ways from the role of a father. But, you can both be good parents, in your own context. Same thing here: we strive to be perfect – that is, to reach the goal of our existence – just as God is (already) perfect. That doesn’t require us to assert that our perfection must be exactly the same as God’s perfection in order to take this command literally!

Jesus taught that we are all children of God and we must be perfect just as our Heavenly father is, this isn’t being taken literally.

What makes Jesus so unique to be worshiped as a god and not to be considered as only a wise and enlightened human being of his time?
Well, some of the arguments against his divinity seem to some people to have some validity. Of course, although Muslims, JW, and Unitarians do not beleive in his divinity, they nevertheless believe Jesus to be a great prophet and holy man. But they say, not God, because in Scripture:
  1. Jesus says that the Father is greater than I.
  2. Jesus says that no one knows the day or the hour, not even the Son, but only the Father.

There are passages in the bible to indicate that Jesus is God.

Some brought a cripple on a stretcher for Jesus to heal. Jesus was in a house, and so his friends made a hole in the roof and let the stretcher down thru the hole and right in front of Jesus. Jesus promptly said, “your sins are forgiven.” Some in the crown began to murmur, “who but God can forgive sins.” And his friends didn’t bring him for his sins, but rather to be healed. So Jesus said, “so that you may know that I have the power to forgive sins, I say to you, arise and walk.”

This is just one story, there are others to show he was God.

Read the beginning of Book 4 of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Contra Gentiles, particulary chapters 7 and 8. He addresses all those and more.
