Hi! My family asked me a question after Mass this week. I have looked around a little for an answer to this, but I haven’t found one. After the presentation of the gifts, when the priest is praying over them, he pours the drop of holy water into his chalice of wine. But he does not put any in any of the other cups. Why not?

Dear JG,

The drop of water symbolizes us being united to Jesus as the result of his great sacrifice. At this time the priest says: “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.” By the one drop the symbol is complete. It is simply not necessary to repeat it.
