Why the Eastern Catholic Churches?

I am curious as to why some Orthodox joined the Catholic Chruch and became the Eastern Rites. I really can only find that this was realy for political reasons due to muslims, etc. I am in search of evidence that the Orthodox does not have a valid claim to be the true chruch and that is why those orthodox join the Catholic church.
