Why the name Jesus and not Emmanuel?

If Emmanuel was the prophesized name of the Messiah, why was Joseph to name Mary’s child Jesus? What is the significance of these two names? Mathew’s gospel says the name Jesus was given to fulfill the prophesy, but why the name change? I have heard in Jewish circles that Jesus can not be the Messiah because he was not given the name Emmanuel.

In the original prophecy Emmanuel is the name of Isaiah’s child. The name is the message - God is with us. Matthew invokes that as pointing to the momentous difference in this child, this Yeshua (God saves–not an uncommon name) - God IS with us.

According to the same passage from Isaiah, Messiah would be called

Wonderful Counselor
Mighty God
Everlasting Father
Prince of Peace

That he would be called these things does not necessarily mean any one of them would be his name . . . (It would make it difficult to call him to dinner 😃 )

Hi Guido, the Lord Jesus has many titles but his primary reason for coming to earth was to be a Saviour. Matt. 1:21 " and thou shall call his name Jesus; for he shall save his people from their sins" Emmanuel " God with us" is a reference to His abiding Presence with us till the end of the world.
 
I agree with the previous poster. The name Jesus; Yehoshua in Hebrew is derived from the name Joshua. You remember him, Moses right hand man that led the Hebrews into the promised land. The name means one who delivers or rescues or one that saves us. I hope this helps.

corrupted by the early Roman Apostasy -
in order to make his name look more Graeco -
Roman rather than “Jewish”.

Shouting or flooding a topic doesn’t make ya right. Besides, I’ll trust the Church with authority given by JESUS that it’ll get His name right.
