An yet there numbers of Priests and Religious keep on going down.Well, I don’t want Catholics to “act more Protestant” for the sake of doing so, and I agree that that has happened to some extent. But the more generous attitude toward Protestantism that has prevailed since Vatican II has by no means been a failure from my perspective. The attitude of Protestants toward Catholicism has been radically transformed. What you dismiss as “acting more Protestant” has done a great deal to overcome the immense damage done in the sixteenth century by the Catholic Church’s refusal to endorse good and true things that looked “too Protestant.” (Protestants, of course, did the same sort of thing, but from my perspective Catholics were basically right on most of the issues at stake and Protestants basically wrong, so I’m more frustrated with sixteenth-century Catholic methodology–my problems with Protestantism run much deeper.)
