Marcus 10, 45:
For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

This is only one of many expressions in the Bible… why theres never the expression FOR ALL instead of FOR MANY? What is Jesus trying to say?

It is because He knows there are some who will never be saved.

Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient to save ALL men. But it is contingent upon all men to accept it. And He knows that not all will.

It is open to interpretation.

While I do agree with the above poster, I can not say for certain.’

It is within the realm of possibility that many = all. All is many not few is it not?

EDIT: Of course the rest of the scripture would support that many does not mean all. It just means many. The above poster has the best explanation you will find.

Jesus is refering to Isaiah 53:11-12 “He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

So, “the many” are the transgressors, or the unrighteous. However, we know that “No one is righteous, not even one.” (Rom 3:10) So, then Jesus must have come to save us all:

2 Cor 5:14 “For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.”

and notice the emphasis on the unrighteous again (which we all are):

1 Pet 3:18 “For Christ died once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”

The Bible writers seem to have disagreed on whether Christ died for all, for many or for the select few.

Marcus 10, 45:
For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."
It’s not the “many” thats really puzzling, it’s the for. (anti in the Greek) here is a list of meanings for that word:
  1. over against, opposite to, before
  2. for, instead of, in place of (something)
    a) instead of
    b) for
    c) for that, because
    d) wherefore, for this cause
That many (polys) often describes a multitude, a number of things in great quantity.

But, I think He is being pretty literal, for Jesus. He must do this *because of *(“for”) many, for those non-righteous imprisoned in their sin. I think He is saying everyone doesn’t need ransoming, necessarily, as He also said, He didn’t come to call the righteous, but to call sinners.

Sorry but that interpretation is quite contorted.

because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors;
Jesus was put together with 2 criminals

and** he bare the sins of many**,
Jesus died on the cross and paid for the sins of the many that accept him and those that even not knowing Him did follow the moral law in their hearts. If you reject him are your sins forgiven? Will you go to heaven? Guess NOT!

and made intercession for the transgressors."
Jesus on the cross said “forgive them Father for they do not know what they are doing”

“Many” is an open-ended multitude of people.

Exactly. 👍

To put it in technical terms, the atonement is unlimited in scope, but limited in reality. Because God has given us free will, some of us will use that will to turn against Him and reject His offer of salvation.

God does not will that anyone should be lost (1 Tim 2: 3-4), but He cannot force us to do anything against our will; therefore, the sacrifice of Christ will be effective only for the faithful, those who accept him (1 Tim 4:10).

God wants all to be Saved… not all men want God:
30 So in future, House of Israel, I shall judge each of you by what that person does – declares the Lord Yahweh. Repent, renounce all your crimes, avoid all occasions for guilt. 31 Shake off all the crimes you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why die, House of Israel? 32 I take no pleasure in the death of anyone – declares the Lord Yahweh – so repent and live!’ (Ezekiel 18:30-32)
14 as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up 15 so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. 16 For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might be saved. 18 No one who believes in him will be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, because that person does not believe in the Name of God’s only Son. 19 And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness to the light because their deeds were evil. 20 And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from being shown up; 21 but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear as done in God.’ (St. John 3:14-21)
…so you see, God does want all to be Saved… but man has the freedom to seek Fellowship with God or to reject Him–though we are presented with two choices, we must choose Life or perish!:
Today, I call heaven and earth to witness against you: I am offering you life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants may live, (Deuteronomy 30:19)

The Bible writers seem to have disagreed on whether Christ died for all, for many or for the select few.
…actually, there’s no disagreement at all… Christ came to save the world, not the planet but all of the people since His Sacrifice is not limited to a determinate geographical location and time… that’s why Scriptures expresses that Christ died Once for all sin–past, present, future… it is this knowledge that allows the Writers to state that Christ died for all or came to Save all without violating Christ’s statement that He gives Himself as ransom for many (St. John 3:19-20).

…well… since Scripture states that there is no one righteous, not even one, we must allow that those who are ignorant or opposed to God are in deed need or ransoming… but we cannot presume that those who are in fellowship with God did not need ransoming since Scriptures also state that we are all sinners and that none can say that he/she is free of sin… Jesus’ ransoming is not to be taken in human terms as His ransoming requires that the person Jesus is seeking to rescue must want to be rescued by Christ–Christ is ransoming each individual human being from his/herself!

Here’s an example of a disagreement.

Matthew 7:14
For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are **few **who find it.

Here’s an example of a disagreement.

Matthew 7:14
That’s not necessarily a disagreement, because:
  1. “Many” does not mean “the majority”. For example, if out of a total population of 1 billion, there are 20 million saved, that is “many”; but it is still relatively “few” compared to 980 million unsaved.
  2. Since God takes no pleasure in the loss of any soul, “many” could be hyperbole. Even if, in my 1 billion example, 600 million were saved and 400 million were lost, God would still take no pleasure in the damnation of 400 million souls; they would certainly be “many”, and 600 million would still be “few” compared to 1 billion.

Here’s an example of a disagreement.
Matthew 7:14
…again, no disagreement!:
6 Jesus said: I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (St. John 14:6)
7 So Jesus spoke to them again: In all truth I tell you, I am the gate of the sheepfold. (St. John 10:7)
Since both the Gate/Door and Way is Jesus, there’s no disagreement because while the whole world (past, Jesus’ contemporaries, and future) can be Saved a comparative few choose Jesus!:
8 All who have come before me are thieves and bandits, but the sheep took no notice of them. 9 I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: such a one will go in and out and will find pasture. (St. John 10:8-9)

25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, will live, 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? (St. John 11:25-26)
