A Reform rabbi at Congregation Solel in Highland Park, Ill., Moffic thinks the study of the common roots of Judaism and Christianity can serve as a bridge between two faiths that have often misunderstood each other.
Moffic wants both Jews and Christians to see Jesus in a fresh way.
For too long, he writes, Christians have looked at Jesus simply as “a ticket to heaven,” and Jews have associated him with anti-Semitism.
He wants Christians and Jews to see Jesus as part of a living tradition less focused on theology and more concerned with living rightly in this world.

I think this is very positive. We need more coming together and unity.

This. We miss the frame of reference when we don’t remember that Jesus was born a Jew, lived the life of a Jew, taught as a Jew, and died a Jew.

I can agree with the concept, but I’m not sure about the line,

" For too long, he writes, Christians have looked at Jesus simply as “a ticket to heaven,”

I’m not sure what Christians feel that way or who he’s spoken to, but we know, or should know, that Jesus is, the way, and the truth, and the life, which pretty much sums up all that Jesus is…

So how is the Rabbi not saying the same thing you are? Jesus is the way to Heaven, if you are quoting that verse to make a point.

Confused why you are confused.

How many Christians say “Simply, Jesus is the ticket to Heaven?” What about the Sacraments?

Especially when we have to “work out our Salvation”?

Very true. Jesus calls us to a deeper relationship with the Father through Himself. He shows us how to live in order to achieve that.

Spot on.

That’s exactly what I meant when I said I was confused by the rabbi’s wording.

If he feels Christians are just using Jesus as a ticket to heaven, I’m not sure he understands us enough to help either Christians or Jews. Christians should already see Jesus as part of a living tradition and should have Him as an example of how to live rightly in this world.

Let the good rabbi leave the understanding of Christianity to Christians…

His intentions are good , however , he forgets that Jesus indeed did found Christianity , should make interesting reading though 🙂

without Jesus, we humans would not know of God’s infinite love for us. we would not know that death has been vanquished and that the Prince of this World has been defeated. we would not know of or be able to break the chains of our slavery to sin. we would not have the Holy Spirit to guide us. we would not know that it is God’s wish that we would live with Him in the glorified realm of heaven.

yes, Jesus did confirm the Law of moses which was primarily about morality and living among each other in community. Jesus also completed and fulfilled the mosaic law that God had given to Israel. without Jesus we would not know that even the mosaic law was incomplete.

on the other hand, the rabbi is right that we christians can grow both morally and spiritually by learning more and more about the relationship between christianity and judaism. after all, the whole point of the Chosen People was to prepare the world for Jesus Christ’s fulfillment of the jewish prophecies. God created the Chosen People, primarily, to introduce mankind to His direct intervention in to human history through prophetic revelation.
