27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Along with the creation of the days, nights, water, vegetation etc.
God blessed the man and woman, and told them ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’
Would the blessing of man and woman be seen as God giving them a soul?
It is only in the second part of creation were God is described as breathing life into the man. The woman is taken from the man :
21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
‘This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called “woman”,
for she was taken out of man.’
In this account, woman does not have life breathed into her as the man did, she has been formed from man by bones and flesh.
As we believe we are given a soul at conception, how did the woman receive her soul, as she could not have been given it from the man?
I just wondered as I’ve read at some point it was believed that women did not have souls,(i think christians always believed women had souls, but some didn’t) and thought perhaps that is why men were and are regarded to some degree, as more spiritual than women.
The only women I believe has ever been hailed as a spiritual equal to man is Mary. She gave birth to the son of God, yet we are not born of Mary and God, we are born of Adam and Eve, and so always to know we are born wounded.
