Why two judgments?

I was reading the tracts on CA and I was wondering,…Why the two judgments? I mean after we die, this is where the purification starts and after this we enter heaven right? But there is a general judgement when Christ will reveal all our sins publicly… :eek: I mean is this necesarry? I’ve had to deal with humbling and often embarassing feeling when I go to confession…and NOW I gotta go through this AGAIN!? and*** PUBLICLY!?***

What gives?..WHY?..I thought that our sins and blemishes will be washed away with the purifiying fire of purgatory…And not only that…doesn’t say in Jeremiah that God will “remember our sins NO MORE?” Can someone explain this to me because quite frankly I’m rather embarrassed enough as it is with myself the past 15-23 years that the idea of having my sins brought up for everyone to see is rather uncomfortable. 😦
 
Don’t sweat it. The Judge decides the admissibility of evidence. Everything He doesn’t remember (per Jeremiah) is inadmissible. 😃

I can hardly wait to see all your sins! No wait… I think that I’ ll most likely be more concerned about my own sins at that moment! Just kidding.
I think it has more to do with determining our state of holiness that we have achieved by the amount of sanctifying grace that we have received during our lives that will determine our worthiness and ability to see God clearly. (beatific vision) . We are both individuals and community and as such will be judged as mankind and accordance to our own deeds

Here then, in the very briefest space, we have seen something of the world into which death ushers us. Yet if death ushers us into the next life, it does not choose our place: that is decided by the state of our soul in relation to God. That is what we call the particular judgment"–the decision made at each man’s death of the place to which each belongs. Till the world ends, we shall live in heaven simply as souls, separated from the bodies which once were ours. In Heaven Christ our Lord is bodily present, that the whole of human nature (not soul only, but the union of soul and body) in its perfection should be present at the right hand of the Father. His body is His natural body, yet glorified: without suffering, or deformity, no longer a cloak to the soul, but as it were translucent, so that the soul is only the brighter for the body it indwells. And similarly our Lady is bodily present too–so says the doctrine of the Assumption. But in the normal course of God’s providence, the souls in Heaven must wait for the Last Day to be reunited to their bodies.

For there is a Last Day. As there is an end to every man’s term upon earth, so there will one day be an end to the term upon earth of the human race. When the Mystical Body of Christ shall have grown to its full stature–“unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ”-- the human race will have achieved its purpose as a race. All the men who are to be incorporated with Christ–built into His body–will have been thus incorporated, and all will be completely at one with Him. Then will come the end of the world and the General Judgment. Christ will judge the whole world–all men will be in their place for all men to see-- and the whole immense plan of God will be seen as a thing perfectly achieved. The bodies of men–glorified, as Christ’s is–will be reunited with their ouls: and every man–body and soul–will be for ever established in joy or woe.

I think there are two judgments because a human being has two parts, a spiritual soul and a physical body. At death, a judgment is passed on our spiritual soul; at the end of the world, a judgment is passed on our resurrected and glorified physical body.

Why would that concern or embarrass you? If I am saved I will be overjoyed knowing I will spend eternity with God and won’t care about my life being laid bare to everyone.

Don´t worry,by that time there´ll be a huge crowd and many angels singing and we won´t hear a thing.😉
 
The general judgment at the end of time is when God reveals everything that has really been going on with everyone, and how fair His judgments really are, to all of us (even the damned). This sort of public proof that a king or judge was fair to everyone was a very important part of the social contract between a king and his people, or between a judge and the law. Since God is Justice and Truth Himself, it is even more important to Him that He answer all the questions of skeptics and critics in public, before everyone and everything He has made.

If you are one of those resurrected to eternal life, this will be a moment of gratitude and jubilation for you. For the damned, it will also not be a moment of embarrassment; it will be a realization that it was “a fair cop”, exactly what they asked for. For all of us, it will be the time we learn the whole amazing history of the human race and its individual members, and the full beauty and joy of God’s loving care for all of us.

It is also part of the divine knowledge and wisdom that we have been promised. Someday we really will know why X happened and Y was allowed to happen, and that knowledge will help us understand God and each other, as well as the rest of Creation.

I agree, I many ways we are judging ourselves as our eternal future will be dictated by God’s justiced based on how much sanctifying grace (faith, hope and charity) we have accumulated while here on earth. The danger is in presumptive thinking that there will be some sort of “general amnesty” at the end or that there will be some valid excuses like “everyone else was doing it” at the end.
 
Well if the protestants are right and there is no purgatory, then two judgments make no sense. But if the Catholics are right (and I believe they are), then the second judgment is when purgatory is emptied and those who are purified now are judged worth of heaven. In that context, the second judgement makes perfect sense. For some people die in an impure, but not mortal state. Those people are not worthy of Heaven at the moment of death… but after their purification, they are!

BTW I think if indeed we see all of everyone’s sins displayed in front of us that all of us who are looking on won’t be judging or condemning anyone, we will be looking on with sympathy and understanding… because ALL of us have failed as well.
 
One accuser, one judge, no jury

Whether it’s public before all mankind or not the purpose will be revealed.
