I am sure this has been brought up before but I am still very new to this forum so bear with me.

You know, when I think about this planet and how large it is to me and how small I am on it, I think to myself “how small a creature I am”.

Then I look to the mountains and I visualize myself there and then I think to myself “I am really very small in the scheme of things”.

Then I see the pictures of earth from the moon and I visualize myself standing on it and as I look back at that beautiful earth and picture myself there I think to myself “I am less then a speck”.

Then they show us the earth from the Mars orbiter and I see something less then a dull spot of light and I think to myself - well actually I don’t know what to think as I feel less then nothing of importance it all that vastness.

Then they show where our sun - not our planet - our sun, and where it is within our galaxy - and it takes a pointer to show the “approximate” location and you can hardly descern a p(name removed by moderator)rick of light. And then I think that our galaxy is just one of millions and I visualize myself looking back and I think to myself why would God even bother with us, an insignificant planet in the incomprehensible vastness of His creation.

Am I the only one who sometimes think, why?

All that has been created has been created for Man. Everything is because **we **are.

We are not insignificant. We are the purpose of Creation.

I think it is all summed up in one word. Love 🙂

By the way…I had to laugh reading your post, the CAF user “Sheridan” pondering the significance of the universse/galaxies/planets from space… Are you by any chance “The One?” :hmmm:

(as if I needed to prove to anybody what a nerd I am already LOL!)

Our significance comes not from how we stack up against the whole universe in size and wonder, but from the elementary fact that God first chose us. Think about it sometime. Here you are the result of one of many of your mothers eggs being fertilized by a single sperm out of millions. There statistically could have been many, many different persons produced at that moment, but God chose you; someone he has known and willed from all eternity. God loves you so much more than all of the universes that he has created for us to exist in.🙂

LOL Ashely 😃 me? The one? Nope, just a person newly reacquainted with the Lord who sometimes wonders what my purpose is, or rather, where do fit into Gods plan. I raised a child by myself - that was a good plan - but she is gone now and I wonder “what do you have planned for me now Lord”. I’m getting to introspective here - I should get back to my usual mirthful self.

hehe, please tell me you got the reference though at least? I feel like such a dork =P

A theater district is eight blocks by five, and in one corner of it there is a theater. In this theater building the actual theater is about one-eighth of the size of the building and is along one side on the ground floor. Against a wall is the stage. On stage is a crowd, twenty actors, and in the rest of the building there are five hundred audience members seated and three times that many waiting for repeats of the show. The crowd of people coming to see the show and leaving earlier enactments of the drama fills the sidewalks of the district and spills into the streets all around. Onstage, three people are singing. Two sing backups, one sings the lead in the song the whole show revolves around. The singer is a child, a twenty-five-pound little boy in the crowd, who are staring at him. Can he be significant, in the context of a big city, a big district, a big stage, a big room, and so on? Of course. He’s the lead.

OK Ashley, I am “the one” alright…the “stupid one”, clue me in - Zathras?
LOL I just assumed from your user name! =P

“Sheridan” is the commander from Babylon 5…and your post was discussing perspective from outer space and what not…so it made me laugh =P

sigh It’s a good thing I married a man as nerdy as myself, or nobody would get me! =P

No, you are not the only one who thinks like this! I think of this stuff all the time. It is mind boggling! Now take the infinite universe and subract human life from the spec called Earth. What would you get? A gigantic endless universe of nothingness. Miracle 1

Second, of all the 50,000 living species that live on planet earth, why is it just humans that are intelligent, rationale, and progressive. If evolution affects all species, why does a dog remain a dog, or a aligator remain an aligator. If Darwin is fully right, why are these amimals stalled in their evolution to become perfect (well, like humans). Humans are one of newest of species, scientist say. How much more 100’s of millions of years do animals need to catch up to us? Miracle 2.

Lastly, within the next 100 years earthly humans will find a way to space travel faster than the speed of light. If intelligent life existed elswhere, say on a planet 2000 light years away, and say the technology level of this planet was 1000 years advanced from ours, then wouldn’t they have found us by now! But there has been zero hard evidence for this case…Miracle 3.

Miracle stacked on miracale = God is the only answer.!

Ashley - my forum name comes from the M551 Sheridan tank. I drove one the last months I was in VN. Long story short it saved my life. Hence the name sheridan.
I only watched a few episodes of Babylon 5 and do not remember much. And please ed-u-ma-kate the dumb one here… what does =P mean?

Thanks YAJ… I agree with you about the Darwin stuff… only I think about the apes… and like you I think why after all these centuries has one not walked out of the jungle, toting a club and looking for chow. Noper, something “special” happened and then there was us. But still I can’t help being awed by the enormity of it all.

Yes, God is Great. Just wait till the Lord brings the new Jerusalem down with him. We havent seen anything yet!

God bless!

We are not insignificant. We are the purpose of Creation.
It seems that in order to provide for man, a whole load of planets , galaxies were made in the process. Seems a waste to me. Why would an all powerful creator be so wasteful?
Not very efficient of him is it. Less than perfect.🙂

Good question, and one that has been taken up by both religious and non-religious theologians (okay, okay…if you count Umberto Eco) alike. I think it was Eco, actually, who proposed myriad versions of Christs on as many worlds, all dying to save the “humanity” of those particular worlds. (I think it was in “The Island of the Day Before”…) He goes so far (if it was actually Eco) to guess that on other planets, the inhabitants might have four arms, and walk around with four-armed crucifixes, as representative of the one Jesus would have been crucified on in *their *world. This rambling of mine, in short, is to say that we can’t really answer the “Why us?” question before we know whether or not the “Us” part is truly singular or not–who’s to say whether or not God breathed life into clay on other planets in reaches of space we will *never *come into contact with.

(Usual caveats apply: I am neither priest, bishop, or doctor of the Church–these thoughts are my own private musings…)

Cheers,
Alberich

You couldn’t just exist floating in oblivion. You need an earth for your body. Earth can’t just be there floating in oblivion. It needs a sun and solar system, and galaxy, etc. etc…and universe, etc.

this article on Catholic Exchange this morning is the very worthwhile meditation of someone who has asked the same question
