My daughter (baptized Catholic) and her husband (baptized Catholic) are civilly marred but not sacramentaly. They have not been attending Mass but now have a daughter (five months old) and want to have her baptized. They know they need to get right with the Church so they attended a baptism class but when my daughter met with the priest today he said that the baptism would not be possible until she (our daughter) applied for and received a decree of nullity for her previous (civil) marriage and they were sacramentaly married in the Catholic Church. Only then could their daughter be baptized. I can accept the fact that they need to become active members of the Parrish and do the steps necessary for a sacramental marriage but should the child be prevented from being baptized until the parents are married in the Church?
