Why was Jesus clothed with gorgeous apparel?

I was wondering if their was some kind of “meaning” why Herod and his soldiers, after treating our Lord with contempt and mocking, “clothed Him in gorgeous apparel” before sending Christ back to Pilate? Did this have some kind of meaning relating to old Jewish customs, etc

Most of the accounts I have read simply state that Jesus was crowned with thorns and a purple cloth or cloak was put on His shoulders in order to mock Him as the “king of the Jews.” However, Luke does refer to the apparel as of having some value. But basically it was still part of an attempt to heap scorn upon Him.
