I heard a talk from an Apologist regarding the Apostles vow to Jesus, " that they would die for our lord" when asked after our Lords crucifixion. But he could not answer confidently why St John was the only Apostle not die a violent death. Was it because St John was the only apostle at the foot of the cross?

Hi,

We don’t know why the Lord chose to not have the Apostle John die a martyr’s death. However, he seems to have risked his life in choosing to be a support to our Blessed Mother at the foot of the cross. He was willing to die to be with her and Jesus in His last agony. So you may be right. It is possible that this was martyrdom enough for him in the Lord’s eyes.
