God chose to impregnate Mary before she was married. My question is why she would marry later. Was she married in order to keep her virginity or as a cultural thing?
Matthew 1:18-25 As I understand it, at that time taking her into his home constituted the final step in the marriage ritual which began with the betrothal. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away. 20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21* she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23* “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.
Probably that’s the only real good reason.Scripture does indeed say Joseph took Mary to him and into his home as his wife - meaning they were married. It would’ve been unthinkable for an unrelated couple to live together being unmarried.
Remember Joseph was contemplating putting Mary away (in other words refusing to marry her) but the angel told him not to. Why would this be necessary if Joseph was then going to just stick to his original plan and not marry her?
There were reasons why the marriage was necessary. The most important was probably that without a husband to claim legal if not biological fatherhood for her child, Mary would’ve been presumed guilty of fornication and stoned to death.
Indeed. The role of Joseph was guardian. He may have been a widower, as one tradition has it, and so Mary was much younger. Christian art depicts only the three, but the Scripture does not say that others were not involved.Probably that’s the only real good reason.
