Why did God allegedly allow Muhammad to take eleven wives, and then subsequently limit the number of wives a Muslim may take to four?

According to my college course on Islam it is because Muhammed was the Prophet of Allah, so he was granted special favors, such as having more wives and the Nocturnal Ascension.

When you make up your own religion, you can do what you want 😃

The Quran is not divine revelation, so to say that “God allowed Muhammad to have 11 wives” is not the case. He took 11 wives.

God allows us to make our decisions, seems he had his heaven on earth then. The love you hold for God is meant to guide you, says alot

Probably for the same reasons Moses, Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon and others were allowed multiple wifes. Probably for the same reason whe God told the Israelites to take a city, they were to kill every man woman and child and beast…BUT the men could “keep the virgins for yourselves.”

Are you sure it was God who allowed it? or free will?:hmmm:

Here Mohammed likely understood the OT by taking scripture verses out of context. Besides to understand the circumstances one I think one would need to know Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers in their entirety:whistle:

Who was going to tell him NO?

Man often thinks that having multiple partners reflects the greatness of his man-hood. Its understandable that these ideas would make there way into a religious text.

Not a Muslim here…but it should be known that Prophet Muhammad lived a monogamous life with Khadijih and that was in a society that placed no limit on the number of wives.

In a society where monogamy was not the rule Muhammad was monogamous.

If you study the verses of Qur’an that relate to the issue of four wives you may be surprised…

*“If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or that which your right hands possess. That will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.”

(Qur’an 4:3) Yusuf Ali translation.*

The marriages that occurred after Khadijih passed away were largely marriages of state…Why was Mary the Copt sent to Muhammad by a Byzantine official? Marriages were part of diplomacy of the period. It had more to do with cementing alliances or protecting some of the women who other wise would not be protected.

All I can say is Jesus would NOT have allowed excuses to marry widows for the sake of orphans. Main thing is to help them. By the time of the NT things had changed from the OT ways.

Jesus had no where to lay His head and in my view could not have a family…

“And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”

Matthew 8:20

Where in Old Testament does God forbid concubinage?
That’s what I meant by free will. God didn’t promote it except that and he’s forgiving in own time and lets man do what he wishes. Abraham listened to Sarah and slept with Hagar. David chose to sleep with Bersheba and God punished him with death of his child but then God rewarded him with Solomon after David repented.

What this shows is man continues to sin…God continues to forgive .until we have Jesus…who saves Mankind.
